Bonjour still in Togo,, Lome part 2 of Day 40 of our Adventure from Spain to South Africa and around!

In the first part of Day 40 we had a stop at Akodessawa Fetish / Skull market which is the biggest VOODOO market in the world!

So on part 2 we continued our way east towards border from Togo to Benin, but before exiting we decided to stop at House of Slaves in Togo which has deep history.

Togo’s Wood House was built by the Scottish after 1835, following King Assiakoley’s installation in Agbodrafor. The purpose of the house was to operate an illegal slave trade, despite England’s abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1807.

​​King struggled to maintain the trade despite the injunctions by Western powers and anti-slavery surveillance cruises in the Gulf of Benin. This house was used for illegal trafficking until 1852.. Here people were transported to get confused, malnourished, and made submissive, to later on be transported to America.

Togo is the place where Voodoo was born. It was practised even more when the slave trade happened. Voodoo and slave trade are inseparable. It was used against "masters" as well as for own well being. It is one of the most misunderstood religions.
