According to a study by researchers from the World Wildlife Fund and Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism, zebra’s make a longer migration over land than any other large mammal in Africa. Researchers tracked eight collared adult Burchell’s zebras to collect two migrations worth of data for their study.<br /> <br /><br />According to a new study by researchers at the World Wildlife Fund, Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and Elephants Without Borders in Botswana, the longest mammalian migration in Africa has been discovered amongst a group of zebras.<br /><br />Researchers tracked eight collared adult Burchell’s zebras to collect two migrations worth of data for their study. <br /><br />The zebras have been observed and documented traveling 300 miles across Namibia and Botswana in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area during 2012 and 2013. <br /><br />They found that although animals meander the plains of the Serengeti more mileage wise, the zebras traveled the greater distance from point to point. <br /><br />Lead author and World Wildlife Fund senior conservation scientist Robin Naidoo is quoted as saying: “The distance covered by these zebra was a total shock to all of us involved in the study, as well as to people familiar with wildlife conservation in the region. Nobody knew that something of this scale, with this much ground covered, was occurring. ” <br /><br />Many animal’s migration routes are affected by land development and hunting, so experts hope the latest information about the zebra’s long distance migration will help in future environmental conservation efforts to protect the areas where the animals roam.
