Myths surrounding the intellect of historic black individuals often end up diminishing their achievements, preventing them from seeing their true ability or receiving the honor they deserve. People years ago dreamed of the technological advancements that the future would bring. Without the work and extensive research done by these prominent black individuals, modern everyday life would not take the same form.

The book "Imagine what if there were no Blacks in the world?" is a book about African-American inventors written by Tamara Shiloh. The book is told from the point of view of a little boy, Jaxon, who is given three wishes ever day. He learns to use the wishes wisely and expreriences the actual inventors appear in front of him offering words of wisdom.
This project is the first in a series of five (5) books on the accomplishments of Black people, which can be used as a curriculum with middle school students. The following EPK is a brief overview of Tamara Shiloh and her firstbook.

Most people think that Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb and that's only KIND of true. The lightbulb has a LOT going on and it took a whole team of people to make it come together. In this episode of The Fab Lab, we learn more about it and Lewis Latimer, the person responsible for the light.

Do you know how communities of Black History Inventors helped push the American experience forward?

Amazing men and women used their creative genius to solve problems while receiving U.S. patents for fountain pens, mops, batteries, paints, furnaces and more.

Inventors of color have used brain power to create it all. Their variety of inventions is extraordinary.

In this video Hugh Smith from Quikthinking.com showcases the creations of several Black Inventors in American History all taken from our mobile iOS and Android app Black History Inventors.

Happy Black History Month!

Here's some more info about each of these inventors.

Marie Van Britton Brown (1922-1999) - Inventor of the First Home Security System

Brown and her husband, Albert, patented the first home security system in 1969. It was complete with two-way microphones to speak to anyone on the other side, peepholes and cameras, and even a call button to reach emergency help.
As a night shift nurse, Brown was tired of feeling unsafe walking home late at night. So she and her husband created this system that isn't too different from what we use today. She went on to patent more devices throughout her lifetime.

Garrett Morgan (1877-1963) - The Traffic Signal and Gas Masks

Garrett Morgan created the first versions of the traffic signal and gas masks. His breathing device prototype was used in WWI and he later personally used it to save two lives in the 1916 Cleveland Tunnel Explosion.

Dr. Charles Drew (1904-1950)

Medicine wasn't in Dr. Drew's plans until he lost his sister to tuberculosis. He attended prestigious universities and worked with transfusions in their early days. His contributions to Britain in WWII lead to the first mobile blood-collecting unit, known as the "bloodmobile".

Dr. Marian Croak (1955-present)

Dr. Croak holds claim to over 200 patents, including VoiP (voice over internet protocol) systems that allow us to make voice calls over the internet. Her work started in 1982 with AT&T Bell Laboratories working in voice and data communications for over thirty years.

She left AT&T in 2014, and now leads Google's Research Center for Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology.
