Though most people can identify inventors Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, they may never have heard of Lewis Latimer or Granville T. Woods, Edison's and Bell's equally brilliant African-American competitors. Actor Glynn Turman introduces black men and women whose inventions have contributed to society from the time of slavery to today.

Here are Benjamin Banneker, the multi-talented inventor, author and philosopher of the 1700's, and Norbert Rilleaux, inventor of a sugar refining process still used today, a man so constrained by race laws that he left the U.S. forever. The program also recognizes Dr. George Washington Carver, known as the "Savior of the South," Garrett Morgan, inventor of the traffic signal, Dr. Patricia Bath, inventor of the laserphaco probe and a modern spokeswoman for African-American achievement, and many more. Take a fascinating look at history as seen and made by African-Americans whose contributions have been ignored for far too long.

These black inventors were kept HIDDEN from us

Black people have faced numerous struggles throughout history, marked by systemic racism, discrimination, and inequality. From the days of slavery to the civil rights movement and beyond, black individuals have fought tirelessly for freedom, justice, and equal rights.
Slavery, a dark chapter in history, dehumanized black people, subjecting them to unspeakable cruelty and suffering.
During the civil rights movement, brave black leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X emerged, inspiring a powerful push for change. They fought for equal rights, challenging segregation and demanding an end to racial discrimination.

These Three Overlooked Black Inventors Shaped Our Lives
Although obscure from history due to race, there are several Black inventors who have shaped our lives and future. Like it or not… they are a part of our national consciousness. There are many more who have directly influenced U.S. society, culture, and future in major ways. You would think these men and women would be celebrated and taught about, instead… their achievements have largely been omitted from the canons of other innovators!  Here are three who changed the chemical industry, the garment business, household work, and telecommunications industries.
