The promise of abundant milk and meat drives many poor African farmers to spend scarce money on imported cattle breeds. However, under the harsh conditions of Africa's smallholder farms, these exotic breeds generally perform poorly. New breeding technologies promise to improve this situation, and generate a breeding pool of affordable, hardy and productive cattle breeds suitable for African farmers.

When I travelled across West Africa this year, Burkina Faso is the country where I saw the largest expanse of farm land despite fighting insurgency.
Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, has faced numerous challenges in its agricultural development, including climate change, land degradation, and limited access to modern farming technologies. However, over the years, the country has made significant strides in revolutionizing its agricultural sector.

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, agriculture has gained a lot of momentum and has the potential to bring about significant transformation in Burkina Faso's agricultural sector, contributing to increased food security, economic growth, and rural development.

Farmers in the country have increasingly embraced methods that work with nature, such as organic farming, intercropping, and crop rotation. These practices not only improve soil fertility and reduce the need for chemical inputs but also make farming more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Burkina Faso has moved away from traditional mono-cropping and has diversified its agricultural production. Farmers are now growing a wider range of crops, including millet, sorghum, maize, rice, cotton, and various vegetables. This diversification not only ensures a more balanced diet for the population but also reduces the risk of crop failure due to weather-related factors.

The government and various international organizations have played a crucial role in providing farmers with access to improved seeds and crop varieties that are more resilient to changing climatic conditions. This has led to increased crop yields and overall productivity.

Ibrahim Traoré's agricultural agenda has the potential to transform Burkina Faso's agricultural sector by prioritizing sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity. Through a comprehensive approach that addresses the diverse needs of farmers and fosters collaboration between the public and private sectors, Burkina Faso can achieve greater food security, economic development, and improved livelihoods for its citizens.

Kenya is set to host an Africa Science Week in the capital, Nairobi. The forum aims to raise awareness of the importance of science and technology -- especially among young people. It will also serve as an opportunity for stakeholders to foster collaboration around science and technology on the continent. Organisers say that with the right investment environment, innovation in Kenya can lead to real economic dividends. Most African countries commit just 1% of GDP to scientific research and development. Experts say this hampers Africa's ability to transform itself sustainably. The week-long event is a joint initiative by several organisations, including the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the Next Einstein Forum.
