Across the African continent, seismic shifts are sending shockwaves through the corridors of power. The recent events in Africa are causing unease among its leaders, a lurking fear of 'who's next?' Stares at long serving African presidents in the face. This unfolding drama unfolds on multiple fronts, has a particular focus on the military. It's a storm we could dub the 'Wind of Coups,' blowing across Africa's political landscape. All eyes are now fixed on two powerful African presidents, Cameroon's 90-year-old President Paul Biya and Uganda's 78-year-old President Yoweri Museveni, both rulers have been in power for decades. Biya, shortly after the coup in Gabon was announced, begun making new changes at the central administrative unit at the Ministry of Defence. In a decree , Mr. Biya made some significant changes by appointing new staff members at the Ministry of Defence’s central administrative division. As for Museveni, the world watching closely for his next move, sensing that change is on the horizon.

Paul Biya: Decades in the Helm of Cameroon

Paul Biya has held the presidency of Cameroon since 1982. His political journey began as the Prime Minister of the country from 1975 to 1982 before ascending to the presidency. A shocking revelation for many Cameroonians is Biya's intention to run for yet another term of office during the 2025 election. This enduring tenure has been marked by a mix of accomplishments and controversies. While his government has achieved certain milestones, such as infrastructure development, Biya's extended rule has also faced criticism for allegations of corruption, electoral irregularities, and an increase in crime rates.

Yoweri Museveni: The Longest-Serving Ugandan President

Yoweri Museveni assumed the presidency of Uganda in 1986 and holds the distinction of being the longest-serving president in Ugandan history. His rule surpasses even the notorious Idi Amin's regime from 1971 to 1979. Museveni also commands the Uganda People's Defence Force as its commander-in-chief. Much like Biya, his leadership has been a mixed bag. While there have been commendable achievements, including relative political stability, Uganda has struggled with challenges such as political succession uncertainty, economic stagnation, a burgeoning youth population, an influx of refugees from neighboring countries, and pervasive poverty. Museveni's leadership has also faced criticism for its authoritarian tendencies and suppression of political dissent.

In a landmark decision, South African lawmakers have voted to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel, reflecting the country's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This move, driven by the opposition EFF and backed by the ANC, calls for closing the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria until a ceasefire is reached with Hamas in Gaza. The resolution, largely symbolic, depends on President Ramaphosa's government for implementation. South Africa, drawing parallels with its apartheid past, has been a vocal critic of Israel's actions in Gaza. The international community is closely watching this development, which underscores South Africa's role in global diplomacy and human rights advocacy. Israel's response and the global implications of this decision remain key areas of focus.

Gender-based violence is a profound and widespread problem in South Africa that disproportionately affects women and girls. In fact, South Africa holds the shameful distinction of being one of the most unsafe places in the world to be a woman. Women and girls are being abused, assaulted and murdered by men in South Africa almost on a daily basis. The spate of violence against women including femicide has increased alarmingly, to the extent that South Africa is said to be experiencing a second pandemic alongside the Covid-19 pandemic. Violence against women in South Africa has therefore been placed at the centre of inquiry in this paper. Although not a new discussion, the increasingly high levels of violence against women demand an ongoing interrogation for meaningful changes to be effected. Furthermore, it is but fitting that the problems and challenges of suppressed groups (women and girls) be made publicly visible. Using a qualitative methodology, this paper seeks to critically examine and highlight the causative factors of the high rate of violence against women. It posits that it is only in fully understanding the causative factors that meaningful actions can be taken to curb this scourge. Drawing from these causative factors, this paper will also attempt to outline strategies which can assist in curbing violence against women in South Africa. This article is underpinned by feminist post structuralism theory as it explores the ways women are treated in the world and seeks to make changes. It further utilises textual and online materials and employs an interpretivist paradigm to provide space for the voices and concerns of the researchers to be heard. Finally, this paper allows for an academic engagement with this second pandemic in South Africa and provides a platform to proffer a panacea for the pandemic.
