BACKGROUND TO THE KILAF '20 VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

Globalization broadly refers to an increase in the impact on human activities of forces That span national boundaries, linguistic and cultural diversities. These realities
suggest that African languages require a platform where they can stand up against
the looming foreign dominance or incursions that may be detrimental to their own
existence. And, because language sums up the whole cultural horizon, we must deliberately
work towards promoting African languages. Therefore, language promotion, maintenance
and sustenance are the impetus that led to the 2018 introduction of the annual Kano African
Indigenous Languages of Africa Film Market and Festival (KILAF).
KILAF is a festival promoted and hosted by Moving Image Limited in the ancient city of
Kano. It is primarily designed to promote film contents produced in indigenous languages
of Africa while encouraging their cross border sales in order to expand their revenue
generation base. Thus, KILAF is hinged on the philosophy of 'Africa First'. We hope to
ignite the African spirit and enterprise to melt into the brewing pot of globalization as a
strong and formidable player. The wisdom is to inspire and nurture African content
producers to live up to the challenges of representing the continent and its worldview or
narratives. After all, with the African Union (AU) slogan of “Africa rising,” 'no one can tell
your story better than you.’
With the digital switchover regime, the emerging ecosystem requires huge amount of
content. Thus, KILAF platform sets out to enlarge the exposure and marketing
opportunities available within the digital space. The 2018 and 2019 editions were very
successful. However, the coronavirus pandemic has seriously thrown us aback.
Consequently, the 2020 edition of the event has been scaled down to only KILAF '20
Virtual Conference. The event has the theme: RESEARCHING, SCRIPTING AND
TELLING STORIES IN AFRICAN INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE FILMS and it has
gained the partnership of the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University, Kano. It has
also attracted thirty (30) paper presentations that will be published. In the meantime, here is
the published compendium of the abstract. Always go to www.kilaf.africa for further
information.
KILAFhas the following objectives:
1. To give people access to a broad range of African indigenous languages' films on a
more regular basis.
2. To encourage intra-African co-operations in productions and marketing of films.
3. To serve as a platform of promoting professionalism and rewarding excellence in
African indigenous language films.
4. To imbibe African spirit and sense of purpose in film practitioners; thus, leading to
generating authentic African media content as per the dictates of African realities,
aspirations and needs.
5. To interface with other contents of the world for mutual benefits.
KILAFMISSION
To inspire, celebrate and promote African content through indigenous languages to enhance
“togetherness in diversity.”
KILAFVISION
By 2025, the impact of KILAF will be felt across the African continent; and beyond, via
Afrocentric media content.

Kelechi, is a Nigerian American Software Engineer and Filmmaker with many years of experience in the world of technology. Despite his astute technical background, Kelechi has always had a penchant for storytelling and creative arts. In the year 2011, he decided to dabble into filmmaking under biGObi Productions. Since then, he has written, directed, produced, and starred in many award-winning films that focus on Africa-related topics and human Rights. All his released films, till date, have been accepted into the libraries of various Ivy League schools (including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford University) as reference materials for African Studies. In his spare time Kelechi, enjoys coaching and playing soccer with the Africa United Football Club. Given his frequent nostalgic experience as an international student when he first came to the United States to study, he formed the club in 1997 to help provide a support group and team-building environment for young Africans far away from home. He mentored many over the years and won several soccer championships with the club, including becoming Champions of the North Texas Premier Soccer League. His passion for bringing Africans together is reflected in both his football team and in his style of film making. On April 20th 2015, Kelechi founded The African Film Festival (TAFF) with the vision to increase the availability of African films in non-African communities. Through TAFF, he has created a large network of African filmmakers worldwide. He designed and produced the beautiful TAFF Trophy, which became one of the most coveted trophies in the African Film Industry. On Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary, October 1st, 2016; Project Green White Green honored him with an award for "Outstanding Personality in service to Humanity and Society." On February 24th, 2018; the African Fashion and Music Festival honored him with African Community Achievement Award for "Outstanding Community Dedication on African Arts and Entertainment Development." On March 28th to March 31st, 2019, Kelechi launched African Women Arts & Film Festival (AWAFFEST) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He created AWAFFEST to celebrate arts and stories of African women, and to empower upcoming female artists with the confidence to become successful independent practitioners without falling victims to any form of exploitation. In June 2019, he launched ROOTFLIX - a leading streaming platform for quality festival-qualified films from various countries. Kelechi created this platform to give Independent filmmakers optional distribution channel to showcase their hard work globally. #KelechiEke #Rootflix #TAFF #AWAFFEST #CamilleKauer #TheESpotwithCamille

There's no doubt that South Africa is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the film industry. This proved once more, by renowned South African filmmaker Mandla Dube whose latest work centres around true events that were instrumental in the change of South Africa's history. Dube is also known for his award-winning film Kalushi - The story of Solomon Mahlangu. Well, the film premiered at a lavish red carpet event in Johannesburg. with the who's who in the industry attending. eNCA's Tanya Nefdt was there and reports. Courtesy #DStv403
