Prof. Dr. Oswald Masebo (University of Dar es Salaam): Tanzanian Perspectives on German Colonial History

The Maasai tribe is a semi-nomadic ethnic group located in Kenya and Tanzania, East Africa. Dance plays a significant role in their culture and is used to celebrate important occasions such as births, weddings, and initiations. The Maasai also have major festivals, such as Eunoto, which marks the transition of young men into adulthood, and Enkang oo-nkiri, a thanksgiving ceremony for their cattle. Maasai culture is centered around their love for cattle, which they consider to be a measure of wealth and status. Their traditional way of life is characterized by semi-nomadic pastoralism, with the men responsible for herding and protecting the cattle and the women responsible for domestic chores.

JICA marks its 60th anniversary of its cooperation activities with Tanzania in 2022. The activities began in 1962, just one year after the independence of Tanganyika, when a single Government Official was accepted for technical training in Japan.
Since then, the activities of JICA continued to grow over the years and now include not only technical cooperation and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), but also the provision of grant aid and concessionary loans. Over the 60 years, JICA’s activities have continued to grow and expand to support many social and economic development activities.JICA will carry out its activities in line with Tanzania's development plan.

Initially a colony of Germany, The United Republic of Tanzania attained independence from Britain on December 9, 1961, under the leadership of Julias Nyerere.

Germany colonized the region as German East Africa in 1891.Following the defeat of Germany in WW1, Tanganyika was handed over to the British under a League of Nations Mandate.

With time, various independence movements emerged, such as the Tanganyika Africa National Union (TANU), headed by Julius Nyerere. Support for TANU among the African population increased as disgruntlement with colonialism, and nationalist sentiments grew, leading to popular protests and riots.

As a result, the first Legislative Council elections with Universal suffrage were held in 1959, and TANU and its allies won all the elective seats. Following another election in 1960, Julius Nyerere was elected the country’s first Prime minister leading to independence the following year

In today's travel vlog we are journeying into a Datoga tribe village in the lake Eyasi region in northern Tanzania.

The Datoga tribe are pastoralists who originally journeyed to Tanzania from Sudan, chasing better grazing for their cattle. But finding their place in Tanzania was far from easy.

They are also renowned for their blacksmith abilities, crafting jewellery, and arrowheads out of scrap metal.

A story of Halima, a 16 year old adolescent girl who was born with HIV in Tanzania. While she received health care and support throughout her childhood, she did not learn of her HIV status until she was 10 years old. Halima tells the story of her challenges and her journey supported by PASADA, a faith-based organisation. With UNICEF support, PASADA has provided psychosocial support, information and skills about HIV and sexual reproductive health and opportunities for economic livelihoods to adolescents living with HIV in Dar es Salaam.

As nations go, Tanzania is in its infancy. It was born in April 1964 of a union of Tanganyika, a former British colony, and Zanzibar, tiny islands off the East Coast of Africa which were formerly Arab dominated. This program explores many of the problems facing this struggling nation - poverty, sickness, education, and lack of trained manpower. Beyond this, the program focuses on Tanzania's policy of non-alignment in the Cold War and its willing acceptance of foreign aid from both Free World and Communist Bloc countries.
