After independence, many African countries went on to form their own national airlines. The majority of them were to later fail due to various issues. One such airline is Nigeria Airways which had risen to become the best airline in black Africa. This story covers the rise, the decline, and the aftermath.
In September 2021 South African Airways (SAA) and Kenya Airways signed a strategic partnership framework that aligns well with the aims of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) of deepening the economic integration and prosperity of the continent. Kenya Airways is the flag carrier airline of Kenya.
Its head office is located in Embakasi, Nairobi with its hub at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Kenya Airways was initially East African Airways which was founded in 1946 and acted as the regional airline serving Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and had its headquarters in Nairobi.
The relations between the countries, however, did not last long, leading to the collapse of the East African Community, which subsequently ended East African Airways.
In 1977, Kenya Airways was born out of the regional airline – East African Airways.
By that time Korea already had its aviation industry running (Korean Air), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) had already assigned them the code ‘KA’.
By being ‘late’, Kenya was assigned the code KQ; that’s the reason the Kenyan airline is referred to as KQ and not KA.
The Kenyan government owns a 48.9 per cent stake in Kenya Airways while Air France-KLM has 7.8 per cent. The rest is owned by private owners and banks.
Kenya Airways is the only African member of SkyTeam, the world's second-largest airline alliance.
Kenya Airways joined SkyTeam as an associate airline in 2007.
SkyTeam's members include Virgin Atlantic, Air France, Air Europa, KLM, China Airlines, Saudia, and Middle East Airlines.
Kenya Airways is a leading African airline flying to 42 destinations worldwide, 35 of which are in Africa and carries over four million passengers annually.
In 2020 KQ was named Africa’s Leading Airline by the World Travel Awards.
It continues to modernize its fleet with its 32 aircraft being some of the youngest in Africa.
This includes its flagship B787 Dreamliner aircraft.
Kenya Airways services London, Amsterdam, Guangzhou, Sharjah, Mumbai and over 25 intra-Africa routes in addition to its passenger network.
The on-board service is renowned and the lie-flat business class seat on the wide-body aircraft is consistently voted among the world’s top 10.
Kenya Airways celebrated 45 years of operation in January 2022.

There has been some impressive growth in African aviation in recent years. Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways have seen significant expansion, and Rwanda-based RwandAir could be on its way to something similar. It is still early days, but RwandAir has already seen some solid expansion, and with investment from Middle Eastern giant Qatar Airways, the sky could be the limit. It is certainly an airline to watch over the coming years.
