South Africa's population has experienced significant growth, surpassing 10 million over the past decade, according to the country's statistics agency, StatsSA. The newly unveiled census results reveal a 19.8 percent increase from 51.8 million in 2011 when the last census was conducted.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking at a press conference in Pretoria, emphasized the importance of this fourth census since the establishment of democracy in 1994. It contributes substantially to our understanding of the state and progress of the nation.

The 2022 census disclosed that more than 81 percent of South Africa's population identified as Black Africans, with 8.1 percent as "coloured" or of mixed-race heritage, 7.3 percent as white, and 2.7 percent of Indian or Asian descent.

In a few days’ time, The Gambia will host the 5TH biennial Conference of the African Sport Management Association (ASMA). The four-day conference which starts on Tuesday, the 22nd of February, was initially slated for March of 2021, but was postponed twice largely as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.

The ASMA was founded in 2010 on the occasion of the 17th biennial conference of the international conference of the International Society for Comparative Physical Education and Sport held in Kenya.

It aims to promote educational and professional sport management in Africa and the rest of the world by ensuring that sport management becomes an academic discipline with the view to not only contribute to the socio-economic advancement of Africa, but the rest of the world too.

The Gambia won the bid to host the 5TH biennial Conference in 2019 at the 4th biennial conference in Nairobi, Kenya on the tag, ‘The Gambia is Ready’.

If you had something really important to mail, would you head to the Post Office, which is run by the government and considered part of the public sector, or would you go to a place like UPS or FedEx, which are private businesses. Politicians in the media often talk about the private and public sectors of our economy but what's the difference? And which one is more effective?

The private sector is made up of businesses or corporations owned by people. The private sector includes malls, grocery stores, and your local diner. To make a profit in the private sector, businesses must earn our money by offering us products and services that we want or need. When businesses have to compete for the same dollars, prices go down because no one wants to pay twice as much for shoes at one store if you can get the same pair cheaper at another place.

On the other hand, the public sector is not supported by profits. It doesn't have to compete for our dollars. Instead, the public sector uses our tax dollars to fund its services. So we pay for these programs no matter how much or how little we use them. The government decides how our tax dollars should be spent in the public sector.

This makes sense for some things. For example, you probably wouldn't want firefighters or police officers competing with one another for your business. In other cases though, this means things cost more or service is worse. The U.S. Post Office has $100 billion in debt and is regularly bailed out with taxpayer money. And the Department of Motor Vehicles isn't usually known for fast, friendly service.
