In today's video we look at the Top 5 Ancient African Inventions that first
originated in Africa.
Please, remember to subscribe and hit the notification bell and leave your
comments below, on what your thoughts are about today's topic, and what other ancient African inventions you know that originated from your country.
In addition, we have a quick question for you at the end of the video and we look forward to hearing your responses.

5. Astronomy
The world of astronomy has largely been associated with the West, though with recent studies and discoveries, researchers and archaeologists have come to the conclusion that Africans were the first astronomers. The Dogon people of Mali, who had the most advanced mode of discovery, had accumulated knowledge and information on Saturn's rings, Jupiter’s moons, the spiral structure of the Milky Way and the orbit of the Sirius star system”.

4. International Trade
When we hear of trade and globalization, we see it as a very recent agenda that has been built to unite the world and make us one global village. Perhaps you even associate it with Europe and America due to the harsh reality of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. Regardless of wherever you are in the world, you will be interested to learn that international trade first started in ancient Africa, with numerous evidence pointing to the first international trade between Africa and Asia that allowed the exchange of ideas, goods, and cultural practices that built the foundations of the earliest civilization of ancient Africa.

3. Mathematics
Indeed, before the likes of Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and et al, mathematics did originate from ancient Africa and is placed firmly in African prehistory. The discovery of the lebombo bone that dates back to 35,000 B.C in the Lebombo mountains of Swaziland, proves that many of the mathematical concepts that we still learn at school were also developed in Africa. Other great discoveries were found in ancient Egypt, that included scripted tablets or textbooks about maths “that included division / multiplication of fractions and geometric formulas to
calculate the area and volume of shapes”.

2. Medicine
Yes, ancient Africans did have medicine and advanced medicine practices, despite what the media or history tell us today and to this day many of the treatments are still in use today in modern medicine. With “the earliest known surgery performed in Egypt around 2750 B.C . Many of the Medical procedures were performed in ancient Africa before they were performed in Europe. These procedures included vaccination, autopsy, limb traction and broken bone setting, bullet removal, brain surgery, skin grafting, filling of dental cavities, installation of false teeth, also what is now known as Caesarean sections, anesthesia and tissue cauterization.”

1. Light Bulb
The world's greatest invention first originated in ancient Africa. The Dendera light bulb or also known as the Egyptian light bulb has and continues to have a lot of controversy regarding its potential as an ancient African technological artifact. With its origins from the best preserved ancient temples in Egypt and its connection to the Egyptian goddess hathor at Dendera. This artifact has archaeologists puzzled and confused, if the ancient Egyptians actually created the first light bulb that was powered by the Baghdad battery, and that could only have been made possible through international trade.

About 200 years ago, long before Johannesburg was established, there was an African city that flourished near the same location. According to records, a European expedition of the time estimated the city at anywhere between 7500 to 24000 people big – greater than Cape Town was, at that time. This city, named Leetakoo, was the capital of the Batlhaping people, a subset of the Batswana nation. It turned out that Leetakoo was not an isolated case, and there were other such cities throughout the region. Thanks to LiDAR technology, Karim Sadr and his team have recreated Kweneng, one of the more significant cities. In astounding, granular detail, he presents the images, and the story behind them, in this fascinating talk.
Karim Sadr is a professor of archaeology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has been in Southern Africa since 1990 and has produced a hundred scholarly publications on various aspects of African archaeology. Since 2008 he has been studying the ancient stone walled settlements between the Witwatersrand and the River Vaal. His remote sensing studies using satellite and LiDAR imagery have shown that this was the domain of a Tswana city-state which flourished in the early nineteenth century. Mariam Mayet is the Executive Director of the African Centre for Biodiversity, based in Johannesburg. In April 2022 ACB published an investigation and analysis of the financial imperatives underpinning Target Malaria's gene drive mosquito project in Burkina Faso and the way in which financial investments in malaria were being driven by rogue capital looking to make money, at the expense of genuine public health policies in Africa which might effectively relieve the burden and real scourge of malaria. Where public health policies would focus on effective healthcare systems and environmental hygiene, rogue capital driven investments in malaria aim at patentable products mainly in the field of vector control, like pesticides, insecticide treated bed nets and more recently risky experiments with GM and gene drive mosquitoes, with malaria control product development becoming a profitable financial market for investors, at the expense of African lives. Interviewed at Mahatma Gandhi's house in Johannesburg, Satyagraha House, Mariam asks why African governments have become so deeply indebted that they are unable to deliver basic public health for their populations, and why Africans should continue to suffer from malaria while being trapped in a treadmill of pesticide resistance and dependency on patented vector-control products. The most in-depth analysis of the financial dynamics underpinning Target Malaria's gene drive mosquito project to date, the African Centre for Biodiversity's report is a major contribution to the debate around gene drives. Nigeria’s produces more Cassava than any other country in the world. It’s a unique plant, that because of it’s high carbohydrate content and hardiness, is a staple in most West African countries. Bosch Packaging is assisting in driving a Cassava agenda with local Nigerian stakeholders by unifying stakeholders across the board, from farmers and farmer groups to distributors and traders to top government representatives. This fascinating piece tells the Nigerian Cassava Story as is, on ground, today.
