Vladimir Putin's Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg is the second time he's invited African leaders to meet him on his home turf, and if attendance is anything to go by, he is more interested in them than they are in him: At the last summit in Sochi, 45 of them turned up, this time almost two thirds of them stayed away. So what is Putin offering? The Russian president has promised to supply African nations free weapons to enhance security on the continent - his country is already Africa's biggest arms dealer. He also pledged cooperation on trade, science and technology.
"Africa is suffering" - those were the words of AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat lamenting that the war between Russia and Ukraine was making Africa's food crisis worse. Responding to African calls asking Kyiv and Moscow to end the conflict, Putin said he'd look at an African peace proposal. The Russian leader rejected as "hypocritical' accusations by the West" that the Kremlin is playing "hunger games." On Thursday, Putin announced free grain supplies to six African nations just ten days after blocking exports from Ukraine by quitting the Black Sea grain deal.

South African anti-migrant group Operation Dudula has become notorious for attacks on migrants, including raids on businesses belonging to foreign nationals.

Operation Dudula was set up in Soweto two years ago, the first group to formalise what had been sporadic waves of xenophobia fuelled vigilante attacks in South Africa since 2008.

It calls itself a civic movement and is a newly formed political party, running on an anti-migrant platform, with the word "dudula" meaning "to force out" in Zulu.

#BBCAfricaEye has gained rare access to members of the country's most prominent anti-migrant movement, as they take to the streets and fight for political power.

Slowly but gradually, Africa is splitting into two. As per research, two major sections of the continent are peeling apart, which could eventually form a new ocean. The colossal breakup is associated with the East African Rift System (EARS), one of the largest rifts in the world.

🇳🇪 If you don’t live in Niger, the recent coup which saw President Bazoum deposed may seem too far from home. But the recent events are already having an international impact and could expand even further.

The BBC’s Miriam O'Donkor explains why.

The five Brics countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are holding their 15th annual summit in Johannesburg. However one of the nations leaders, Vladimir Putin, will not be there.

The G7 nations have been very critical of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but the Brics nations, including South Africa, less so.

The BBC's Kim Chakanetsa takes a look at why that is.

🇳🇪🇳🇬 He’s Nigeria’s former Central Bank Governor, an ex-Emir, and an Islamic leader. But, above all, he is one of the very few prominent leaders from abroad that has been granted a one-to-one meeting with the leader of the coup in Niger, General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

So far, the man who ousted President Bazoum has snubbed representatives of the US and the African Union, just to name a few.

The BBC's Nkechi Ogbonna explains why Sanusi Lamido Sanusi could become a potential negotiator to the #Niger crisis.
