#colouredpeople #capetown #southafrica
The colored people of South Africa are the most genetically mixed people in the world, with genetic heritage from the Bantu, Khoisan, South East Asian, European and Middle Eastern. Mitochondrial DNA studies have demonstrated that many maternal lines of the Coloured population are descended from Khoisan women. As a consequence of Apartheid policies and despite the abolition of the Population Registration Act in 1991, Coloureds are regarded as one of four race groups in South Africa.
Thank you and welcome to Afroartista Films. The Coloured community has a rich history that dates back to the arrival of the first Dutch settlers in the 17th century. These settlers brought with them slaves from Indonesia, Madagascar, and other parts of Africa, and through intermarriage, a new mixed-race population was formed. The Coloured people were considered a separate group from the white settlers and the indigenous black population, and were subject to different laws and policies under apartheid.
About twenty percent of the Coloured speak English as their mother tongue, mostly those of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Virtually all Cape Town Coloureds are bilingual. About 13.5% of the South African population, around 7 million people, speak Afrikaans as a first language, making it the third most common natively-spoken language in the country. This is the language that most Coloured people speak. It evolved from early Dutch spoken by the first immigrants from Holland and despite obvious similarities with Dutch, it is today considered as a distinct language. Here is a sample of the language.
Coloureds are mostly found in the western part of South Africa. In Cape Town, they form 45.4% of the total population. The various subgroups of the coloured people are the Cape Malays, The Griqua, Cape Colored as well as any other mixed race broadly labelled as others. Cape Coloureds identify as black in every other country besides Namibia. The reason is because the racial classification in other countries is different from South Africa and Namibia's racial classification and other countries don't have the racial classification "coloured".
The Coloured community faced significant challenges throughout history, particularly during the apartheid era. They were denied many basic rights and faced discrimination in areas such as education, employment, and housing. The end of apartheid in 1994 brought significant changes for the Coloured community. They were no longer legally classified as a separate group and were granted the same rights as other South Africans. However, many Coloured people still face economic and social challenges, particularly economic inequality, Education disparities, Health disparities, Housing crisis, racial discrimination, Political under–representation and violence and crime.
Despite these challenges, the Coloured community has remained a vital and vibrant part of South African society. They continue to make important contributions to the country's culture, economy and politics. They have played a prominent role in the country's music, arts, and sports, and have produced many notable figures such as Alex la Guma, Trevor Noah, Peter Abrahams, Abdullah Ibrahim, AKA rest in Peace, Sho Machozi, and Zola Budd among many others. The Cape Malay coloured people are responsible for one of the most vibrant South African subcultures which can be seen in their unique Afrikaans dialect, foods and entertainment.
In conclusion, the Coloured people of South Africa are a diverse and resilient group that has played a significant role in the country's history and culture. They have faced many challenges throughout history, particularly during the apartheid era, but have remained a vital and vibrant part of South African society. It's important that we continue to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of the Coloured community, and to work towards addressing the on-going challenges they face. Thank you for watching and see you again.

A domestic worker worries about her missing son as she cares for her employer's children.

UMAMA is used with permission from Talia Smith. Learn more at https://umamafilm.com.

Sibongile is a domestic worker in South Africa, who watches over her employer's little girl and maintains their home during the day while trying to stay connected with her teenage son, and has promised to celebrate her son's academic achievements.

Her son, though, has troubles of his own. When he goes missing, Sibongile has no choice but to go to work, fulfilling her job duties as she worries about her son's disappearance.

Written and directed by Talia Smith and inspired by real events, this intensely personal and intimate short drama is not just a snapshot of contemporary South Africa and the complicated nature of domestic work, but a tribute to the act of mothering itself, wherever it is called for.

Smith mined memories of her own "second mother" in her South African childhood, a woman named Susan who also lost her son while working for Smith's family. As a result, the writing and storytelling have a closeness of detail and a deep interest in character that gives the film remarkable tenderness and empathy. The narrative fleshes out both halves of Sibongile's "two families," including both the son she empowers by providing for his education, and the little girl she nurtures and encourages as part of her job.

Both of these wells of affection are complicated by the many layers that Sibongile experiences as part of this work: she provides for her son, but she cannot see him as much as she wants, and her affection for her charge is genuine, but also is complicated by the class disparities that are in part a legacy of apartheid.

Often very emotionally intimate and socially observant work can be on the more meditative side, but the craftsmanship is deft. Winning Gold at the Student Academy Awards, the film is full of indelible images but also dynamic, even muscular camerawork that offers thriller-like sequences, capturing the lively but impoverished and volatile milieu that Sibongile and her son live in.

These sequences are almost so compelling that they almost seem to run away with the film, but the storytelling always returns to the grounded, palpable heart of Sibongile, played in a remarkably full and rich performance by South African star Connie Chiume, who beautifully illuminates Sibongile's many layers -- some of which pull at her loyalties.

UMAMA ends on a note both heartwrenching and heartwarming for both viewers and Sibongile. It illustrates the powerful emotional labor that makes up much of mothering, full of nurturing, presence and attention. It is also the hard work and sacrifice that Sibongile goes through to give her son what she never had, thanks to the historical and economic legacies of apartheid. Both sides of Sibongile's mothering have their joys and sorrows, made bittersweet by the fact that they are inseparable.

Opening in 1994, Knuckle City shifts between the childhood and adult lives of the sons (played as children by Inga Mtshizana and Elethu Mfombi) of legendary boxing champion turned gangster Art Nyakama (Zolisa Xaluva). Cut to 2019 and the boys have grown up to follow closely in the footsteps of their father.
Dudu (Bongile Mantsai) has become a womanizing professional boxer and Duke (Thembekile Komani) is now a career criminal, chasing money and thrills at every turn. But Dudu is about to age out before he's had his chance at fame, and the fight promoters have a lot more faith in the young talent coming up behind him than they do in his comeback chances. With Duke set to be released after a three-year stint in prison, Dudu enlists the help of his brother's criminal connections to try to get himself one last shot — but both end up with a much bigger fight than they bargained for.
Qubeka takes audiences to a real-life birthplace of boxing world champions, which also happens to be his home township of Mdantsane in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. Shooting with slick, gripping style, Qubeka also draws attention to the extreme poverty that is the legacy of apartheid, and the toxic-masculine ends to which it pushed those in Indigenous communities. Deliberate and decisive, Knuckle City is a fast-paced confrontation with actual circumstances that pulls no punches.
