Earlier today, a group of senior army officers made a dramatic announcement on live television, declaring a takeover of power in Gabon. This marks the country's second coup attempt in just five years, the previous one having occurred successfully in 2019, resulting in the subsequent sentencing of the involved soldiers to 15 years in prison in 2021. If this current coup attempt is successful, it will spell the end of the Bongo family dynasty, which has ruled the nation for 53 years.
The soldiers, identifying themselves as members of the "Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions" (CTRI), stated that their action is motivated by a desire to uphold peace by ending the existing regime's hold on power. Buckingham Palace has declined a request to return the remains of an Ethiopian prince who came to be buried at Windsor Castle in the 19th Century.
Prince Alemayehu was taken to the UK aged just seven and arrived an orphan after his mother died on the journey.
Queen Victoria then took an interest in him and arranged for his education - and ultimately his burial when he died aged just 18.

President Bola Tinubu has met with the top management of Ethiopian Airlines to hold talks about settling disputes and issues affecting relations between Ethiopian Airlines and the Nigerian Government.
The delegation was led by the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar.
The management of the Ethiopian Airlines led by its group chief executive officer, Mesfin Tasew had raised a number of issues, which could affect its operations and relations with Nigeria and requested to have an audience with President Tinubu on the sidelines of the 37th session of the African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa.
The details of the meeting was not disclosed as both the Ethiopian Airlines authority and the Nigerian government insist it is meant to enhance the air service of Ethiopian Air in Nigeria.

Riots erupted as two rival groups of Eritreans clashed with each other and then with police officials in The Hague in the Netherlands on February 17. Several cars and police vehicles were set on fire near the Opera House building around the Fruitweg. To quell the unrest, police used tear gas to disperse the rioters who threw stones and bricks at them, the Associated Press reported. Images and videos on social media showed dozens of men in a street clashing with the police.

On Sunday, accompanied by police, bulldozers began demolishing houses in Al-Gameel Neighbourhood, Port Said, Egypt, after evicting residents.
In 1978, the state granted 317 plots of land to citizens on the condition that they would build and develop them. In 2023, the Port Said municipality decided to remove the houses reportedly without providing any reason.
Residents took their case to court but were unable to reverse the decision. At least 2,500 families are believed to be affected by the demolitions.
