In this episode, follow our colleague Susanna Seymour as she goes to Antananarivo, Madagascar. This region was hit by a severe tropical storm in 2015, causing unprecedented floods and damages that particularly affected a crucial dyke safeguarding the city and its residents.

In response to this crisis, the European Investment Bank provided 40 million euros to help Madagascar's reconstruction efforts. The goal was not only to repair dykes, bridges, and roads but also to fortify them against increasing threats of extreme weather events fueled by climate change.

During her journey, Susanna engages with residents who share their stories and discuss how the dyke's reconstruction has positively transformed their lives.

Join us on this impactful journey and learn more about the resilience and renewal of Antananarivo!

Swazi culture is the way of life and customs of the Swazi people through various historical stages. The culture of Swazi people involves music, food, religion, architecture, and kinship, among many other things. The Swazi people are composed of various Nguni clans who speak the Nguni language siSwati. These people mostly reside in Eswatini and South Africa. Presently, Swazi people may also include citizens of Eswatini. In Eswatini, one of the most visible features of cultural identity is the traditional political structure of the nation and the home. In the national level, the Ngwenyama is considered the head of the nation alongside the Ndlovukati who is the spiritual leader of the nation. National cultural events often involve the Ngwenyama or Ndlovukati. At home, the patriarch of the family is the head and in the past, often practiced polygamy. This headman, usually referred to as umnumzane is central to all activities of the home. A group of homes forming a community and the land they reside on forms a chiefdom or umphakatsi. Several chiefdoms form an inkhundla which then belongs of a regional division of the country. This connects the older traditional leadership structures to more modern forms of government.

Come along on our journey to the enchanting Kingdom of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland! This tiny nation nestled amidst Southern Africa and Mozambique is a place filled with rich cultural heritage and stunning scenery, offering a glimpse into the past and a warm embrace of the present.

We road-tripped from Johannesburg to the capital of Mbabane, getting the unique experience of crossing the border by land. The next day we set out to explore the cultural highlights, starting with the renowned Swazi Candles. Next, we ventured to the Mantenga Cultural Village, a mesmerizing recreation of traditional Swazi villages from the 1850s, and were enthralled by the exceptional performances of the Sibahle Ngemasiko Cultural Group. Before bidding farewell to the kingdom, we made our way to Ngwenya Glass, where hand-blown glass creations were another highlight of our short trip.

Papua New Guinea is a Pacific country, consisting of the Eastern half of New Guinea and the island of Melanesia. Papua New Guinea has the richest tribal heritage of all countries in the world, with scores of tribes living in reservations on the islands. The country has 852 documented languages, of which there are no known speakers for 12. The country is also home to a number of tribes that have not come into contact with the outside world for centuries, making them a scientific and cultural curiosity.

Welcome to Things To Do Channel your online travel guide, we’re happy to help on your travels around the globe so be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.

Here are 6 things to do in Papua New Guinea

Attend the Milamala Festival

The traditional festival of the Trobriand Islands is celebrated to mark the harvest of the sweet yams and is one of the most recommended things to do in Papua New Guinea. The festival is usually celebrated with a whole host of activities, including canoe racing, matches of cricket and some really dirty dancing according to local customs. This festival of free love and yams has become increasingly unpredictable in dates because it depends on the wishes of the local chief.

Visit the National Museum and Art Gallery

The Museum, located in Port Moresby, should be on top of your Papua New Guinea things to do list. The various exhibits are divided into sections such as music instruments, ceremonial drums used in festivals(kundu and garamut), clothes and costumes, totem poles and canoes and other seafaring things, and finally elaborate masks. The Milne Bay canoe is a popular attraction here, decorated in extensive splashboards and huge cowrie shells.

Watch the Goroka Show

The show is the oldest in all the country, and attracts thousands of people to the National Sport Institute’s Sports Oval in Goroka, the capital of the Eastern Highland Province. The singsing groups are the central attraction of the festival, flooding the show with traditional music and dance. All hotels in the city are sold out weeks before the event, and the Goroka festival is truly one of the hottest things to do in Papua New Guinea in September.

Spend a day at the Varirata National Park

Located at an average height of about 800 metres, the Varirata National Park is a little reminder of the fact that the Oceanic islands are home to some of the most stunning and diverse flora fauna in the world. There are several clearly marked trails here that can take anywhere from an hour to three hours to traverse. You can spot the occasional paradise birds and kingfishers, but birdwatchers have reported more exotic species, making it one of the best Papua New Guinea activities for nature enthusiasts.

Meet the mudmen in Asaro

So this is something that you would definitely not see anywhere else and is truly one of the most amazing things to do in Papua New Guinea. Traditional warriors in Asaro wearing costumes also covered themselves in mud and wore mud masks to produce a striking and intimidating image, and even though there are no tribal wars and real mudmen to speak of in Asaro anymore, tour companies can organize recreations of local warfare for tourists.

Chill on the beaches at Yuo Island

A great answer to the question of Papua New Guinea what to do, the beaches on this remote island just off the mainland are god’s own paradise. The pristine beaches and waters and forests here will make you feel like the last person on Earth. There is no electricity or running water here to add to the lost world charm. The ultra clear waters here are great for snorkeling and diving, and you can find some truly exceptional marine life here.

Make sure to subscribe to find out all the best things to do in your favorite city.
We research the best things to do with kids, at night, this weekend and more for each city around the world.

Within Africa is an area covered by lava which is approximately the size of Rhode Island. This lava field originates from a single volcano known as Dubbi that is located in the nation of Eritrea. Dubbi is a bimodal volcanic system that has produced long silica poor lavas and highly explosive rhyolite lavas. This volcano produced a famous and explosive eruption in 1861, and is likely to produce more eruptions in the future. This video will discuss this volcano in Eritrea, the Afar Triangle, and extent of its 1861 eruption.
