The BBC has been hearing gruesome testimony, of abductions and beheadings in Mozambique.

An Islamist insurgency in the east African nation, has driven more than half a million people from their homes in the past year.

Aid agencies say it's a humanitarian crisis that the rest of the world has ignored.

A BBC team reached a besieged town at the heart of the conflict, the first international journalists to do so.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Africa correspondent Andrew Harding, from Palma - in the Cabo Delgado region of Mozambique.

A growing insurgency has been ravaging large areas of northern Mozambique.

Both the Islamist insurgents, who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, and the Mozambican army have been accused of atrocities. In one of the latest videos from the region a group of armed men can be seen murdering a naked woman - but, where exactly did it happen and who are they?

The BBC's Andrew Harding has been speaking to researchers from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, and also to open source investigators like @il_kanguru (who prefers to keep his identity private), to try to establish what exactly happened.

The Mozambique army says it does not agree "with any barbaric act that substantiates the violation of human rights". The government has promised to investigate the video, but also suggested the footage has been doctored. The insurgents are known to have impersonated soldiers by wearing their uniforms in the past.

The storm killed more than one thousand people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Hundreds of people are still missing as a result of the severe flooding that hit the region and outbreaks of cholera and malaria have added to the suffering. The World Bank estimates that three million people are still suffering the after-effects of the natural disaster. DW's Adrian Kriesch met with the mayor of Beira, who is fighting a daily battle to overcome the emergency left by the storm and to help his city move on.

Political party leaders in Mozambique have been urged to accept the outcome of the election. More than 10 million voters cast their ballots in the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. It's a three horse race between ruling FRELIMO, former rebel group RENAMO, and a much younger party - the Mozambique Democratic Movement.
It's hoped the ballot will help to bury old animosities still lingering from a 16-year long civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO.
FRELIMO is expected to be returned to power.
