A Nigerian mother slaps her son so hard his life flashes before his eyes.

FESTIVAL OF SLAPS is used with permission from Abdou Cisse. Learn more at https://instagram.com/abdou__cisse.

Ade is joining his Nigerian parents for a celebratory dinner at an elegant restaurant in London. But at one point, his mother slaps him hard, to the shock of the other restaurant patrons.

The force of the slap brings up memories of Ade's past, of growing up in South London with his immigrant parents, when he and his mom would clash over his happy-go-lucky, free-spirited attitude and lackadaisical attitude to life. But the present-day slap, as well as the flow of memory it releases, makes him reflect on Ade's own parenting of his daughter Emma -- and all the things he learned from his mother.

Directed and written by Abdou Cisse, this dynamic short dramedy is, at its heart, a family narrative examining the clash between old-fashioned tough-love African parenting styles and modernity -- a contrast that also informs the film's considerable stylistic risks and energy, making for a watch that is as intriguing and entertaining as it is reflective and empathetic to both generations's perspectives.

The narrative's jumping-off point is the slap in the restaurant, followed by a catalog of conflicts that Ade has had with his mother over time. The film's title references a popular hashtag on Nigerian TikTok, and in many ways, many of the film's visual strategies seem to feed off the platform's cocktail of irreverent wit and quicksilver energy, from the hilariously heightened operatic slow-motion drama of the slaps to the action-packed editing to the almost fractured narrative.

Entering the world of the film at first can be disorienting, but the storytelling also provides interludes in the form of flashbacks to Ade's childhood and adolescence. Rendered in a relatively calmer naturalism, we piece together a strongly emotional yet turbulent relationship between son and mother, with arguments often focused on Ade's immersion into British life and ending in a wallop from Mom.

As actors, Josh Tedeku and Kemi Lofinmakin play young Ade and his mom with a dynamic of love, expectation and resentment that many teen-immigrant parent pairs will recognize, especially noting the pressure and anxiety Ade's mom experiences, trying to parent a wayward son in a culture that isn't her own. But as an older, wiser Ade, actor Tom Moutchi carries the film's primary emotional turning point, as he receives the slap in the restaurant. The slap is to save his life, and realizes how the intensity of his parents' love fueled their sometimes tough approach to keeping him on a solid path in life.

Vividly realized, boldly dynamic and fascinating to watch, FESTIVAL OF SLAPS ends with a full-circle moment, one that not only harkens back to the film's riveting, uproarious beginning but also provides a wry comment on the cyclical nature of family patterns. Errant children become stern parents when faced with the intransigence of their own kids, and suddenly it all becomes clear: how we work out our past in the present, how some things never change and how part of adulthood means realizing how we might be more like our parents than we thought.

Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum has been removed from power, according to reports from the AFP and Reuters news agencies, citing a statement from a group of soldiers made on national television.

"We, the defence and security forces... have decided to put an end to the regime" of President Bazoum, said Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane, flanked by nine other uniformed soldiers in the address. Reading from a statement, the soldiers said, "The country's borders are closed and a nationwide curfew declared." Earlier on Wednesday, the group had blocked off the presidential palace in the Nigerien capital, Niamey. According to comments made officially and unofficially from President Mohamed Bazoum's office, a contingent of the presidential guard had been trying to detain Bazoum inside the residence.

Security sources in the president's office spoke to several news agencies, with one telling AFP that elite troops had suffered a "fit of temper" and that "talks" were underway looking to defuse the situation. Soon after, Niger's presidency issued a pair of tweets, the first of which it soon deleted. The second said that elements of the presidential guard were in effective revolt but that the bulk of the armed forces remained loyal. "The president of the republic and his family are doing well," the publication that remained online said. "The army and the national guard are ready to attack the elements of the GP [presidential guard] involved in this fit of temper if they do not return to better feelings." A later tweet, published at around 0500 GMT, said: "The hard-won gains will be safeguarded. All democracy- and freedom-loving Nigeriens will see to it." The country's Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou called on all "democrats and patriots" to make this "perilous adventure" a failure.

He told France24 that the elected government was the only "legal and legitimate power is the one exercised by the elected president of Niger." He also added that the detained president was in "good health." An AFP journalist in Niamey reported that the area around the presidential complex was sealed off on Wednesday, but also reported no abnormal signs of military activity or sounds of gunfire in the area. Traffic appeared normal.

The West African ECOWAS group of countries, currently chaired by Nigeria, issued a communique soon after the news broke saying it reacted with "shock and consternation" to the news of an "attempted coup d'Etat."

"ECOWAS condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempt to seize power by force and calls on the coup plotters to free the democratically elected President of the Republic immediately and without any condition," the statement, signed by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, said.

"ECOWAS and the international community will hold all those involved in the plot responsible for the security and safety of the President, his family, members of the government and the general public." The United States also condemned the developments and called for Bazoum's release. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed support for Bazoum and said he had spoken to him after his department said earlier that it had been "gravely concerned about the developments in Niger."

"The US condemns efforts to subvert Niger’s constitutional order by force, and underscores that our partnership depends on the continuation of democratic governance," Blinken said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Sahara is the biggest desert on earth. It takes its name from the Arab word for "emptiness". In the dead heart of that emptiness there's a place called the Tenere. The Tenere takes its name from the Tuareg word for "nothing". A nothing the size of France in the middle of an emptiness the size of the United States. It's no wonder the locals call this place "The Land Of Fear”. David Adams retraces the trade routes of the people who call this stove-hot corner of the planet home.

People are always trying to conjure up a magic formula for getting young people interested in the news, but two Senegalese rappers may have cracked it. Keyti and Xuman - both veterans of Dakar's huge hip-hop scene - present the Journal Rappe, a short TV show that covers the week's news in a hip-hop format. The show was launched in April as a new way for the duo to combine their music with news, politics and entertainment. Journal Rappe takes a humourous approach to current affairs but the rappers take their mission seriously, regularly criticising politicians and encouraging people to register to vote.

"I think that the only way to draw people in and capture their attention is to make the product interesting," said Keyti.

"That they see we are having a good time making it, because whether it's Xuman or me, we have been perceived as engaged and serious artists and all, and all that allows us to break the ice."

Keyti and Xuman are no strangers to Senegalese politics; they have been involved in campaigning for more than a decade. They used their music to encourage residents to register to vote ahead of the country's 2000 elections, and that ultimately helped former opposition figure Abdoulaye Wade get elected. They were also involved in the Y'en a Marre campaign to oust him when he fell out of favour after two terms, and now Macky Sall is President.

Their political influence aside, Keyti and Xuman are good musicians who have a legion of loyal fans who attend their gigs and watch their content on YouTube. Report by Mark Morris.

A Senegalese judge on Thursday ordered that jailed opposition leader Ousmane Sonko be reinstated on the electoral roll, clearing the way for him to stand in next year's presidential election. Sonko was struck off Senegal's electoral register after being sentenced in June to two years' imprisonment for morally corrupting a young person. Sonko now has until December 26 to officially declare his candidacy ahead of the 2024 election, but an appeal by the government could still derail his ambitions of running for office, FRANCE 24's correspondent Sam Bradpiece said.

Senegal has been experiencing what many say is the worst civil unrest in more than a decade.

Thousands of young people took to the streets earlier this month, in anti-government protests.

The West African nation is usually seen as a model of democracy but the country’s economy has suffered during the pandemic. The World Bank says around one in three young people are out of work or underemployed.

Last month the EU parliament approved a new set of immigration rules which will allow member states to send send illegal immigrants back to where they come from. They can also be detained for up to 18 months and banned from re-entering the EU for five years.

One of those who would have been affected by the new rules is 28-year-old Senegalese Omar Bar. The boat he travelled on to Europe sank. He was the only survivor.

Now he lives legally in France and campaigns to alert young Africans to the risks they are taking if they try to reach Europe. This is his story.

Residents of Iriani village in Chuka Sub County on Thursday morning woke up to a rare spectacle when a witch performed magic in public.

The renowned witch popularly known as Njua, had been called by bodaboda operators of Chuka town to perform his black magic so that they could know the person who killed one of them whose body was found dumped in a maize farm on Wednesday morning.

Mr Njua, aged about 80, arrived at crime scene carrying a black bag full of paraphernalia and in company of his helper.

On arrival he slaughtered a black goat that had been brought by the deceased kins before proceeding with the ritual.

The witch went on, undressed, and remained with only a black short before removing his items from the bag arranging them in a style.

He then drunk some liquid with his helper put in a long decorated horn before sharing it with the specific bodaboda operators who had contacted him.

Mr Njua warned that the men who took the drink must not share a bed with their wives for a period of seven days scaring hundreds of onlookers who had gathered to witness.

2021 Oscar® Selection, Chad
LINGUI, THE SACRED BONDS [LINGUI]
With Chad's official Oscar® submission, Chadian master filmmaker Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (A SCREAMING MAN, GRISGRIS) crafts a bold portrait of a determined single mother, her pregnant 15-year-old daughter and their struggle to seek out an abortion in a country in which the procedure is condemned by religion, society and the law. Exiled from her family at a young age after having a child out of wedlock, Amina (Achouackh Abakar Souleymane) has built a life for herself as a humble craftswoman living in the outskirts of Chad's capital, N'Djamena. When she discovers that her teenaged daughter Maria (Rihane Khalil Alio) has been expelled from school for becoming pregnant, Amina is adamant Maria not suffer a fate like her own. So when Maria decides to pursue an abortion — illegally, by default — Amina supports her decision and the pair embark on a perilous odyssey through N'Djamena and the hidden networks women must navigate in order to survive. Like last year's Venice Golden Lion winner HAPPENING, LINGUI is a resonant depiction of a fight for personal freedom against overwhelming odds, which is as relevant in America as it is in Chad. Winner, Top Five Foreign Language Films, 2021 National Board of Review Awards. Official Selection, 2021 AFI FEST, Cannes, Toronto, London, Chicago and Miami film festivals. DIR/SCR Mahamat-Saleh Haroun; PROD Melanie Andernach. Chad/France/Germany/Belgium, 2021, color, 87 min. In Arabic and French with English subtitles. NOT RATED

On August 11, 1960, Chad gained independence from France. In half a century of independence Chad has known decades of on-off war, poverty crisis, and trouble with its neighbours like Sudan. Then oil was discovered and this year the country signed a treaty with Sudan putting an end to the fighting. So are things finally coming together for Chad, or will its newly found resource become a curse as it has in many African nations?
