Nestled in the heart of Africa, Burundi is a land of stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm and friendly people. Burundi is a landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The official languages of Burundi are Kirundi and French, with Swahili also spoken widely.

From its vibrant traditional drumming and dancing to its delicious cuisine and world-renowned coffee and tea, Burundi is simply unique. In this video, we'll discover Burundi through its rich history, its beautiful beaches, cuisine, as well as its more recent political and social developments.

Burundi's history dates back to the Kingdom of Burundi, which existed from the 17th century until the country was colonised by Germany in the late 19th century. The country was then passed on to Belgium after World War I, and they introduced a system of indirect rule which favoured one ethnic group over the others. This led to political and social unrest, and in 1962, Burundi gained independence from Belgium.

The early years of independence were marked by ethnic tensions. In 1972, a military coup resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians, and this sparked a series of reprisals and counter-coups, and the country descended into a cycle of violence that lasted for decades.

In 1993, Burundi held its first democratic elections, but they were marred by violence and a coup led by military officers. This led to a civil war that lasted for over a decade and claimed the lives of over 300,000 people. The war ended with the Arusha Accords in 2005, which established a power-sharing government. Today, Burundi is still struggling to overcome the legacy of ethnic conflict and political instability, however, there are signs of progress.

Ruanda-Urundi was a territory in East Africa that existed from 1924 until 1962. It was a Belgian colony that comprised present-day Burundi and Rwanda. The territory was created after World War I, when Germany was forced to surrender its colonial possessions in Africa. The League of Nations then granted the mandate to Belgium to administer the area.

Under Belgian rule, Ruanda-Urundi underwent significant changes, including the introduction of cash crop agriculture, the establishment of a centralised administration, and the imposition of a feudal-like system of governance. In 1962, both Burundi and Rwanda gained independence from Belgium and became separate countries. However, the legacy of Belgian colonialism had a profound impact on the region, leading to ongoing political and ethnic tensions.

Today, Burundi and Rwanda can still be considered as sister-countries as they both share very similar cultures, with almost the same language.

Bujumbura is the economic capital city of Burundi and is located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. It is the largest city in the country and the main economic and cultural centre. The city was originally founded by German colonisers in the late 19th century and was named Usumbura.

Bujumbura has a rich cultural heritage, with a mix of colonial and traditional African architecture. The city has many landmarks, including the newly built Presidential Palace, , and the Musee Vivant, which is a popular museum that showcases the traditional culture and wildlife of Burundi.

Bujumbura is also known for its lively markets, where visitors can find a variety of goods including handicrafts, textiles, and fresh produce. The city's nightlife is also vibrant, with many bars, restaurants, and nightclubs offering a mix of African and Western music.

Despite its beauty and cultural richness, Bujumbura has faced challenges related to poverty, political instability, and violence. However, the city and its people continue to work towards a brighter future, and Bujumbura remains an important part of Burundi's identity and history.

The traditional drumming of Burundi is an important aspect of the country's cultural heritage. It is a form of communication, celebration, and entertainment that has been passed down through generations. The large drums are called INGOMA, and are made from hollowed-out tree trunks and covered with animal skins.

Drumming has been an important part of Burundian culture for centuries and was used to communicate important messages and signals, such as warnings of danger or announcements of important events. Today, it is still used in traditional ceremonies, such as weddings and funerals, as well as in contemporary music.

In 2014, the traditional drumming of Burundi was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This recognition highlights the importance of this cultural practice and its contribution to the world's cultural diversity.

THE OKAVANGO DELTA

The Okavango Delta, one of the largest freshwater wetlands and inland deltas, remains an extensive and unspoiled wilderness area that has garnered global acclaim. In addition to being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Delta earned a spot among the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013.

Spanning between 6,000 and 15,000 square kilometers of the Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana, the Okavango Delta owes its existence to the Okavango (Kavango) River. This remarkable river traverses the heart of the Kalahari Desert, creating a unique inland water system that sustains a rich diversity of bird and wildlife species, as well as the Okavango Delta's dynamic ecosystem.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

Chobe National Park is situated within the Okavango Delta in Botswana and encompasses four distinct ecological systems. It is a renowned destination that boasts over 120,000 African elephants, making it one of the top places on earth to witness these majestic animals in their natural habitat. The optimal time to observe these gentle giants of the African bushveld is during the dry season, which falls between May and September, when huge herds gather along the banks of the Chobe River for spectacular sightings.

The untainted wilderness of Chobe National Park not only hosts the world’s largest group of African elephants but also a vast variety of wildlife and birdlife, including numerous buffalo. The Savuti Marsh is known for its incredible wildlife concentration throughout the year, making it one of the best destinations to observe animals in Africa.

Mashatu Game Reserve

Situated in eastern Botswana, the Tuli Block is an awe-inspiring expanse of land that borders South Africa and Zimbabwe, where the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers converge. It is a region replete with abundant wildlife, featuring towering baobab trees, thick riverine forests and dramatic rocky landscapes. In the past, the Tuli Block was comprised of private farms, but it was transformed into a well-maintained conservation area and wildlife sanctuary a few decades ago. Today, the Tuli Block comprises of numerous reserves, including the Mashatu Game Reserve and the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, which is one of the largest privately-owned game reserves in Southern Africa.

MAKGADIKGADI SALT PANS

Makgadikgadi, one of the world's largest salt pans, was formerly a lake spanning an immense 10,000 square kilometers in the north-eastern region of Botswana. Despite its arid and fissured appearance, visitors to this extraordinary part of Botswana will be pleasantly surprised by the abundant wildlife that inhabits it.

In the summer, the bleak and parched landscape of Makgadikgadi transforms into a thriving grassland, which attracts a diverse range of wildlife, including springbok, wildebeest, and zebra, as well as lion and cheetah. Countless flamingos flock to the shallow waters that flood the vast salt pans, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

MOREMI GAME RESERVE

The Moremi Game Reserve, also called the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, is a small yet significant reserve located in Botswana. It covers one third of the Okavango Delta and is adjacent to the Chobe National Park. The reserve is known for its vast diversity and high concentration of African wildlife, which makes it a top tourist attraction in Botswana for wildlife enthusiasts.

The Moremi Game Reserve and its neighboring private land concessions in the Okavango are known for providing an exceptional environment to see rare wildlife species in their natural habitat. This includes the endangered Wild Dogs as well as other unique species such as the Black-maned Kalahari Lion, Sitatunga, Puku and Red Lechwe antelope, Brown Hyena, the African Skimmer and Aardvark.

Bouni is a coastal village on the island of Grande Comore in the Comoros.
Bouni Beach is one of the busiest beaches around Comore.It is popular to both Tourists coming for sightseeing and villagers. And is famous for events and the weekends are more lively with all kinds of concerts by famous musicians that frequent the beach.Other activities that take place include beach sport like volleyball, football, and soccer.The locals are very friendly people so getting along is no problem.

Crystal clear sea, fine white sand, and a forest of palm trees make Bouni Beach a perfect getaway. Locals and tourists gather here for volleyball and soccer, or just swimming in the warm Indian Ocean. Though generally lacking infrastructure, the beach has some improvised huts and bars, which add a special charm to the place. Feel free to pitch a tent and spend a couple of nights in the peaceful and safe atmosphere.

Bouni and Chindini on the eastern coast and Chomoni on the southern coast are like a small tropical Eden, with just a few baobabs and wooden bungalows to shelter from the sun. Like Mauritius, the rich sealife in the waters of these beaches are perfect for diving, however, the only diving centre that exists is on Grande Comore, in the only luxury seaside hotel on the archipelago. This centre also organizes deep sea fishing expeditions and excursions around the island on a boat.
