What movie depicts urban warfare like few others? The Battle of Algiers, one of the great war movies ever made. Disturbingly relevant, "The Battle of Algiers" depicts some of the events of the 1954-1962 Algerian War, between the French and the Algerians.

The movie was released in 1966, looking like a documentary composed of newsreel footage. "The Battle of Algiers" has been called realistic or considered to be a "neo-realist" movie, though I question that in the video.

I also discuss Plato's Republic and the concept of "thumos," considering why revolts like the ones in "The Battle of Algiers" take place. Why are people willing to kill themselves in a revolt? Why form mobs? Why create scapegoats? The movie asks and depicts these questions and more.

Algeria has become the latest country to ban the Barbie movie, after it had already been showing at some cinemas for several weeks.

An official source told local news that the reason for the ban was that the movie "promotes homosexuality and other western deviances" and that it "does not comply with Algeria's religious and cultural beliefs”.

Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, has topped $1bn in worldwide box office ticket sales since its debut, but its release has not been short of controversy in international cinemas.

The movie was banned in Kuwait last week in order to “protect public ethics and social traditions”.

In Lebanon it was set to be screened in cinemas from 31 August, but the culture minister has called on the interior ministry to “take all necessary measures to ban showing” the film in Lebanon.

The film was also delayed in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain as it underwent censorship reviews, but finally debuted in cinemas last week without any censorship

When most countries conquer overseas lands they keep them as colonies. Yet in the case of Algeria, France made it a part of France itself in the same way that Paris or Corsica were. So why did France do this and how did a part of France itself manage to become independent? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Film festival | 2014, March 26 - 30 | Haus der Kulturen der Welt

In presenting Algerian cinema, the festival showcases a film scene that is hardly known in Germany despite its high quality and its outstanding directors and actors. Although it originates just beyond the gates of Europe, Algerian film, like the country it comes from, is largely a "blank space" in the atlas of its neighbors across the Mediterranean. In contrast, the films included here open up a sharp, reflective view of the country's past and present.

The feature films and documentaries of the festival program have been selected by Ahmed Bedjaoui, film critic, University of Algiers professor of film studies, and a central figure in Algerian cinema for four decades. They trace Algerian film's political and cinematic lines of development. Alongside productions representing milestones in the country's cinematic history, highly topical works from the last ten years hold an especially prominent place. Many of the new films also look back at the history of Algeria since the liberation struggle -- evidence that colonialism, the war for independence and the civil war against the Islamists in the 1990s remain potent and challenging issues to be grappled with. At the same time, these films undertake a critical analysis of the current political and social situation of this country, in which an "Arab Spring" did not take place.

WAR WITHOUT IMAGES is the return of photographer Michael von Graffenried to Algeria, a country which, between 1991 and 2000, he visited incognito, taking pictures of people with a hidden camera. During that time before 9/11, Algeria was shaken by a civil war between the government and islamic extremists in which about 200,000 people lost their lives. In a land where Islamic terrorists executed more than sixty journalists and photographers in 1993 and 94. The result is a film that holds a mirror to contemporary Algeria: a crossed, contradictory, complex place where laughter and tears intermingle. It is a country that wants both to live and to forget its tragedy and which is still looking for its identity, somewhere between East and West.

Algeria, Africa's second largest country was colonised by the French in the 19th century. But unlike the neighbouring French protectorates of Tunesia or Morocco, Algeria was considered French territory, legally a mere extension of mainland France itself. And by the mid-20th century it was home to over one million European settlers. While they enjoyed the privileges of French citizenship, the overwhelming majority of the population, Arab and Berber Muslims, reaped few benefits from the French presence.

"The majority of the native population didn't have the same rights that were held by a French citizen. There was a contradiction between those supposedly egalitarian republican principles that France was supposed to be importing to Algeria as a colony, and the reality," historian Benjamin Stora says.

In 1954, a group of Algerians, determined to end France's colonial rule and achieve independence, turned to violence. On Novermber 1, the recently formed National Liberation Front (FLN) launched attacks across Algeria against French military and civilian targets.

For the French authorities in Paris the FLN's aim of independence for Algeria was unthinkable. Troups were sent in to clamp down on what was regarded as mere civil unrest. And even as the violent rebellion escalated in the coming months into an all-out conflict, France refused to admit it was entering into war.

"War can only take place when two clearly distinct national groups are concerned. Calling it a war meant admitting that Algeria wasn't France," lawyer Jacques Verges.

Algeria may have been considered part of France, but for those on the mainland the violence engulfing it often seemed distant.

"I wasn't really interested in what was happening in Algeria. I was mainly bound up with myself, sports, friends, I had a completely ordinary life," Jean-Pierre Vittori says.

But his life was soon to be touched by events across the Mediterranean Sea.

"Every French man had to carry out military service [...] if we didn't, we were considered traitors, cowards. So one day I received an official letter calling me up, and I went, just like that, without asking myself too many questions," Vittori says.

But on arriving in Algeria uncomfortable questions about the French mission were difficult to suppress.

"On one side was a few Europeans living in the region that had a lot of money, on the other was the Algerian population which had almost nothing. I started myself asking questions concerning their reasons for rebelling, wondering whether their action was in fact justified," Vittori remembers.

France's bloody eight-year war in Algeria left millions of people dead and ultimately ended in failure for the European power when the African nation declared independence in 1962.

The war left deep psychological scars in both countries and has affected relations between the two countries to this day.

For many of the one and half million French veterans the conflict is know known as "la guerre sans nom" (the war without name) and still evokes complex emotions more than 40 years on with some feeling shame and regret, others bitterness and anger.

"I lost a part of my life, I lost my mother, I lost everything, everything. And today I look at the French people and see that they have no answers to those of us who've suffered," Bernhard Salkin, one of the veterans says.

Al Jazeera examines the bitterness still provoked by France's colonial war in Algeria and how it fuels resentment between France and its Muslim community.

Algeria gained its independence from France's colonial rule on July 5, 1962 after 132 years of oppressive rule.
55 years later Algeria still struggles for recognition of those crimes and France has never truly apologized for its barbarity which included the more than 1.5 million Algerians murdered and hundreds of thousands arrested and tortured for resisting imperialism, beheading of civilians and mass rape.
