Almost half of Senegal's population lives below the poverty line, but young men like Domou Walo are fighting for a better life. In the country’s capital of Dakar, Walo trains for La lutte or Laamb, Senegal's traditional form of wrestling. The sport has been practiced since the 14th century and includes elements of mysticism. Top contenders regularly compete for prestige and six figure prizes. Filmmaker Tom Sweetland captures the athleticism, ritual, violence, and brotherhood that underpins the sport, where the young challengers train to improve their family’s lot in a country where many survive on an average income of only $10 a day.

Desperate to escape conflict and poverty, thousands of migrants and refugees attempt the perilous journey to Europe each year, with many crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in rubber dinghies and wooden boats.

In the wake of the decommissioning of Mare Nostrum, a search and rescue operation run by Italy, the humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), launched their own vessel, named the Bourbon Argos, to find those stranded at sea and save those in trouble on one of the deadliest routes to Europe.

On board the vessel, refugees and migrants are provided with medical aid, food, and shelter, then brought safely to Italian shores. Having survived life in Libya, ruthless treatment by smugglers, and horrific conditions aboard flimsy boats, once aboard the Bourbon Argos they face yet more uncertainty as they approach Europe.

VICE News teamed up with MSF to document these search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean and speak to rescued refugees and migrants, hearing about the suffering they have endured in their attempts to reach a new life.

Farmers in Malawi have rushed to small-scale gold mining to make up for lost income from poor harvests. Villagers are digging up and sifting soil in search of the precious metal to sell to buyers in neighboring countries. But Malawian authorities are cracking down on the unlicensed and illegal mining. VOA's Lameck masina reports from Lilongwe.

Residents of Iriani village in Chuka Sub County on Thursday morning woke up to a rare spectacle when a witch performed magic in public.

The renowned witch popularly known as Njua, had been called by bodaboda operators of Chuka town to perform his black magic so that they could know the person who killed one of them whose body was found dumped in a maize farm on Wednesday morning.

Mr Njua, aged about 80, arrived at crime scene carrying a black bag full of paraphernalia and in company of his helper.

On arrival he slaughtered a black goat that had been brought by the deceased kins before proceeding with the ritual.

The witch went on, undressed, and remained with only a black short before removing his items from the bag arranging them in a style.

He then drunk some liquid with his helper put in a long decorated horn before sharing it with the specific bodaboda operators who had contacted him.

Mr Njua warned that the men who took the drink must not share a bed with their wives for a period of seven days scaring hundreds of onlookers who had gathered to witness.

William Kamkwamba is a young inventor from Malawi who gained international attention for his innovative solutions to the challenges facing his community.

Despite these challenges, William was determined to find solutions, and began experimenting with ways to generate electricity using locally available materials.

William's most famous invention was a windmill that he built using old bicycle parts and scrap metal, which he used to power a small generator and provide electricity to his family's home.

William's ingenuity and perseverance earned him international acclaim, and he has since become an advocate for innovation and education in developing countries.
