For the past four years South Sudan has been torn apart by civil war – and the situation in the country is desperate. Famine rages across all conflict zones and the first victims are often displaced people. As battles are lost on the ground, families are forced to leave everything behind to try to survive. FRANCE 24 reporters Charles Emptaz and Olivier Jobard spoke to people in the eastern rebel-held Jonglei region as government troops led an offensive to take the regional capital of Waat.
In South Sudan, the rebels are desperately waiting for rain. The rainy season is coming soon, which should stop the advance of government tanks and troops who have taken control of Waat, the regional capital. The battle has led to an exodus of tens of thousands of civilians from the Nuer ethnic group, the main supporters of the rebels.

This 2020 release of Google Darfur has been updated to reflect the changes that have taken place since 2007. Since 2003, militias known as Janjaweed, now known as Rapid Support Forces (RSF), under orders from the Government of Sudan, have killed over 200,000 civilians.

Over 2.5 million have been forced into refugee camps.
These numbers do not include the RSF victims in Libya or Yemen.

In a bid to secure their oil & mineral interests inside of Africa, many of the world's major governments pour weapons and money into the region and remain indifferent to the carnage, allowing the violence to spread further.

Frustrated by the situation, in February 2007, 2 North Americans traveled to Eastern Chad and teamed up with 2 Chadians. Google Darfur is the story we captured.

Google Darfur was entered into the International Criminal Court case against the President of Sudan, Omar Al Bashir, for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.

The war in South Sudan began in murky circumstances in mid-December, when tribal factions within the country's army, the SPLA, began fighting each other in the center of the capital, Juba. The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar's Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe. Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict. VICE News arrived in Juba and found the army desperate to dispel rumors that rebels were advancing on the capital. Soldiers were keen to take our correspondents on a trip with them into the bush to recapture the strategic city of Bor from the rebels... only the raid didn't turn out quite as they had expected.

Welcome to Juba City. Juba City is the capital and largest city of South Sudan. The city is situated on the White Nile and also serves as the capital of Central Equatoria State.
Juba is the world's newest capital city, and has a population of over half a million in 2021. The growth of the town accelerated following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, which made Juba the capital of the Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan.
Juba is developing very rapidly due to oil money and the Chinese coming for work and development. It has been described as undergoing an economic boom, especially in the past five years and since independence.
The prospect of an economic boom has brought thousands of opportunity seekers to Juba, mostly from northern Sudan and the rest of East Africa with several regional and international businesses establishing a presence.
Tall modern skyscrapers adorn Jubas newly tarmacked avenues with shiny billboards announcing the latest commercial establishments. Traders are smiling all the way to the bank as hungry customers throng the well-stocked shops. It’s clear to all and sundry that business in Juba City is booming.
