Eritrea officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the Horn of Africa region of Eastern Africa, with its capital and largest city at Asmara.
Eritreans, along with Northern Ethiopians, have a genetically unique phenotype. They are genetically connected to tribes in the Mediterranean, such as Berbers and Arabs. This could be one of the reasons why they are strikingly beautiful.

30th anniversary commemoration of Operation Fenkil
Each year, in the month of February, Massawa takes center stage in the heart of Eritrea as it commemorates Operation Fenkil. History has come to many places, has stayed awhile and, after its departure, has rendered those places famous. In Eritrea’s saga, perhaps no place has taken on greater historic importance than the Northern Red Sea city of Massawa. Operation Fenkil would forever hold a place in the minds of all Eritreans.

On February 8, 1990, the EPLF forces began the offensive by cutting off the critical supply route from Massawa to the Asmara garrison. The surprise attack stunned the Ethiopian military and by the following afternoon the EPLF forces were in the suburbs of Massawa. On the third day of the offensive, the Eritrean forces captured the Ethiopian naval base near the town. The only remaining portions of the city to rid of Ethiopian troops were the islands. Operation Fenkil was one of the most decisive military operations that heralded the end of Ethiopian colonialism in Eritrea.
The operation was carried out through the coordinated attack of the infantry, the mechanised and the then nascent naval forces of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF).
The port city of Massawa was crucial for the Ethiopian Second Division. It had been a life-line for the shipment of its armaments and other logistics.

Understanding the importance of the port city to the survival of its war machinery, the Dergue regime spent many years building strong fortifications that surrounded Massawa.

The gallant Eritrean freedom fighters scored a decisive military victory over the then biggest army in Sub-Saharan Africa that was armed to the teeth with sophisticated Soviet weaponry. “The operation was a pinnacle of success to the EPLF besides proving its steadfastness and just cause,” said Mr. Andebrhan chair of the association of the former 16th and 70th EPLF divisions. “After the demise of the Nadew command, the collapse of the Ethiopian army in Operation Fenkil was another crucial turning point in the history of the armed struggle,” he added.

It was simply a bitter pill to swallow for the Dergue soldiers that they would never henceforth defeat the Eritrean freedom forces.

In August of 2018 I spent 4 weeks on the island of New Guinea. Half of that time was in Papua New Guinea, discovering many beautiful tribal communities and three incredible festivals. The preparation for these festivals was often more wondrous than the spectacle of the festival itself, so the first half of the video is devoted to that preparation, while the second half is devoted to the dance, music, and artistry of these amazing tribes.

Last May, I had the chance to visit the exotic country of Papua New Guinea to represent the Philippines in the APEC App Challenge, a software development competition that is one of the many pre-events of APEC 2018.

This trip would easily qualify as one for the books. First, I and Mark were privileged to be chosen to join this competition. Second, meeting some of the best software developers from other countries in the Asia-Pacific and becoming friends with them is just amazing. Third, I am beyond grateful that Papua New Guinea is the host of APEC this year.

As a travel writer myself, I'm probably not gonna be able to think about traveling to PNG for leisure on my own discretion. But it's so refreshing to experience the country in a different perspective, and as an APEC delegate at that.

During the hackathon, I and Mark developed an e-commerce platform with an image recognition technology. Other countries worked around VR, AR, blockchain, indexing system, and SMS tech. When everyone could just win the competition, it wqs trimmed down to whose technology best answers the pain points of the target market - the bilum mamas or weavers of Papua's famous handicraft bags. 💼

While we did not win the competition, we won new learnings, memories as well as new friends to keep and treasure. Congrats to PNG, Australia and Vietnam! 👏

It's a totally great experience and we're grateful to The Asia Foundation for this entire experience. 🙌
