Zambia is dealing with one of its worst cholera outbreaks in recent years as 351 people have died and nearly 9,000 active cases have been registered.
Climate change has fuelled heavy rains which have contaminated drinking water in overpopulated and impoverished urban areas, mostly in the capital Lusaka.
Health workers are scrambling to contain a crisis that has the potential to be the worst the country has seen since the first outbreak in 1977.

Street vendors arrived on the outskirts of the Zambian capital Lusaka to find that their food stalls had been shut down after they had set up shop in defiance of emergency measures that banned public gatherings and imposed a curfew.
Police say they've contained rioting from angry street vendors.
The government says market places like these are breeding grounds for cholera.
And while it accepts the new rules are tough, it isn’t backing down.
At least 70 people have died in the outbreak in more than three months.
The government says it’s confident the disease will be stamped out in a few weeks.
Al Jazeera's Mereana Hond reports.

Zambia's government has decided to delay the start of the new school year by three weeks due to an ongoing cholera outbreak that has resulted in 150 deaths since October. The Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, announced that schools, originally set to reopen on January 8, will now commence classes on January 29. The decision comes in response to the increasing number of cholera cases across the country. As of the latest government figures, Zambia has reported more than 4,000 cases of cholera, with a mortality rate of 3.7 percent. In the past 24 hours alone, 342 new cases have been recorded, along with 23 deaths.
The government, while acknowledging the impact of pandemics on the education sector, emphasised that prioritising the safety of school communities remains paramount. To curb the spread of cholera, Zambia has implemented measures such as distributing chlorine to disinfect contaminated water. The World Health Organisation has expressed concerns about the rising number of cholera cases globally, particularly in Africa.

The US Government has given Zambia four new High performance helicopters and three year training of staff worth about K1.5-billion.
United States Africa Command -AFRICOM- Commander General MICHAEL LANGLEY says the helicopters will enable Zambia continue to support UN peace keeping missions on the continent and are in line with its commitment of maintaining peace in Africa.
Speaking at a media briefing, General LANGLEY said the helicopters will also help Zambia in responding to future disasters, assist in effects of climate change and provide assistance to neighbours.
Financial Markets Advisor Betty Wilkinson says African countries including South Africa, can lessons from how Zambia has started constructing its economic recovery. Fixing the civil service, empowering women, simplifying rules associated with business, and helping informal businesses to stabilise and grow, are some of the main ingredients. The Zambian economy was already ailing and fell into a deep recession when the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. Some political writers, commentators and academics say the election of Hakainde Hichilema as the country's new president has guided Zambia toward economic recovery since taking office in August 2021.
Betty Wilkinson, Senior Financial Markets Advisor working with different sectoral agencies making recommendations to support development in the African markets, shares more.
