ECOWAS is getting tough with Guinea: After the military coup there, the Economic Community of West African States has imposed travel bans and financial sanctions on the country's new leaders and their families. At a summit in Ghana Ecowas leaders also demanded the unconditional release of Guinean President Alpha Condé as well as a "very short" transition period. These demands are the bloc's toughest response yet to the military takeover in Guinea earlier this month. The announcement was made as coup leaders in the country wrapped up a week of consultations with various stakeholders to map out a framework for a transitional government. And it's not just Guinea. Across western and central Africa three more countries have been hit by military takeovers: Mali, Niger and Chad. First Mali, Guinea's direct neighbor: Since last August there have been two successful coups in the country: Malian Forces mutinied in August 2020 forcing 75-year-old President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta to resign, after months of protests. Then, in May of this year, another coup: The Army stripped the next President, 71-year-old Bah N'daw, of power after just nine months in office.Vice President Colonel Assimi Goïta, seized power. He's just 37, making him one of Africa's youngest leaders.Further east in Niger, the 2021 election of Mohamed Bazoum was the first democratic handover of power in the country's post-independence history. But his inauguration looked to be in jeopardy in March when heavy gunfire broke out close to the President's official residence, in the capital Niamey. A rebel military unit had tried to reach the palace - only to be beaten back by the Presidential Guard.Within hours, the government declared the coup thwarted and Bazoum was inaugurated two days later. And Niger's neighbor Chad saw the military seize power in April this year after the death of longtime President Idriss Deby. The army installed one of their own, Deby's son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, as the new president - ignoring and repealing the Constitution, and suspending Parliament.

Malawian President Peter Mutharika made a final plea to voters on Saturday, promising to develop the country "beyond recognition" if he wins next week's election.

Mutharika, who came to power in 2014, could face a tough battle to hold onto office in Tuesday's election, after his presidency was damaged by corruption allegations.

"We have set Malawi on the path of progress. The opposition have nothing to criticise me on," he told several thousand cheering supporters in Blantyre at his final camp…

Tens of thousands of Malawians protest, Thursday, January 16, over alleged attempts to bribe judges overseeing a legal challenge to the re-election last year of President Peter Mutharika.
—————————
READ MORE: People took to the streets after the country's chief justice charged that the five judges presiding over the case had been offered kickbacks.

The complaint, which was filed to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday, prompted a call for demonstrations in Malawi's three main cities. Around 50,000 people gathered in the capital Lilongwe, with smaller rallies in Blantyre and Mzuzu.

They braved the rain and stood vigil outside parliament. Many wore white T-shirts printed with "ACB name and arrest the bribers now."

Opposition leaders say the May 21 poll, which saw Mutharika narrowly beat runner-up candidate Lazarus Chakwera, was marred by fraud. In August, they petitioned Malawi's top court to annul the results — the first time presidential election results have been legally challenged since the country gained independence from Britain in 1964.

Thursday's demonstrations unfolded peacefully and no incidents were reported at any of the venues, according to police spokesman James Kadadzera.

President Mutharika has brushed off all doubts on the official results, which show he won just 159,000 votes more than Chakwera, a margin of around three percentage points. A ruling is expected by the end of January. (AFP)

STORYLINE:

Zimbabwe's crumbling democracy dominated discussions Monday at a meeting of Southern African leaders in Malawi, where the chair of the conference called on President Robert Mugabe to hold free and fair elections.

Instability in Zimbabwe could convulse all of southern Africa, and the meeting of the 14-member Southern African Development Community (SADC) was seen as one of the last opportunities for regional leaders to reign in Mugabe ahead of presidential elections scheduled for March 9 and 10.

"We are very hopeful that the elections will be peaceful, free, fair and transparent," said Malawi's President Bakili Muluzi, who was hosting the summit. "As a matter of fact, what is important in an election is not just the election day but the entire election process, from the preparations to the vote counting and the announcement of results."

Muluzi said Mugabe had given him an undertaking to allow foreign journalists in during the elections, adding he would have to be taken at his word.

But the deportation by Malawian authorities of four Zimbabwean leading human rights activists, who had planned to lobby for a tougher stance against Mugabe, did not bode well for those who hoped SADC leaders would break ranks with one of their own.

In the Zimbabwean capital of Harare, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said he was disappointed with the SADC, calling it a body "full of double standards and hypocrisy."

As part of his fight for political survival after 21 years in power, Mugabe has cracked down on the opposition through legislation and government-sanctioned violence.

The deteriorating human rights situation has sparked international condemnation and concern.

Polls indicate that Mugabe is in danger of losing power, but the possibility of free elections appears remote.
