The ICJ will hold its second day of hearings today. It's all part of a week-long process in which representatives from 52 countries will provide oral arguments on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.

A Palestinian legal team kickstarted hearings in The Hague on Monday, while Israel has refused to participate in proceedings beyond a written argument. Today, the court will hear oral arguments from the following 11 countries: South Africa, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Bangladesh, Belgium, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada and Chile.

Algeria's political crisis is coming to a head. The leader of the ruling coalition RND Party has joined calls from the head of the army to declare Algeria's ailing president unfit to rule. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been in power since April 1999. Critics say that during his time in power, he's led a corrupt regime and hoarded the country's wealth. Algerians have been protesting for weeks in an effort to force him to step down.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the Kremlin on Thursday during Tebboune’s three-day official visit to Russia.

Putin praised the cooperation between the two countries in various spheres. He thanked the Algerian President for “the readiness to provide some mediation services” in the Ukrainian military operation.

“I outlined to my Algerian colleague the Russian vision of the initial cause of the conflict and assessment of the current situation,” Putin said.

Putin said that he also discussed military aspects between Russia and Algeria with Tebboune.

After talks the two leaders signed a declaration on deeper strategic partnership.

Tebboune thanked Putin for his "generous heart" in allowing the possibility of mediating the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Tebboune is expected to take part in the plenary session on the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.

Twenty years ago, one of the longest, most brutal and deadliest wars of the last century ended in Angola. In 27 years, this conflict left nearly 1 million people dead and displaced 4 million. It has also left the country in ruins: In 2002, 60 percent of Angolans did not have access to drinking water and 30 percent of children died before the age of five. Has the West African country recovered from these dark years? We find out in this report by Clément Bonnerot, Dombaxi Sebastiao, Evan Claver and Juliette Dubois.

José Eduardo dos Santos, Angola's second president who ruled for almost four decades, has died aged 79, the government has said.

He died in Spain where he was treated after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Dos Santos will be remembered for ending a long-running civil war in the early 2000s - his supporters dubbed him the "architect of peace".

But his legacy is soiled by high levels of corruption and human rights violations while he was in power.

Angola's election commission said on Thursday the ruling party MPLA had a strong lead over the opposition.
The MPLA has ruled Angola for nearly five decades, most of it under president Jose Eduardo dos Santos who was in power from 1979 to 2017.
But despite Angola's oil wealth, little has reached its people and unemployement is high.
UNITA had hoped to capitalise on young people's frustrations over poverty.
So could the outcome lead to renewed turmoil in this African country?

Presenter: Kim Vinell

Guests
Jose Gama, member of the Mudei Civic Movement.
Borges Nhamirre, Research Consultant at the Institute for Security Studies Africa.
Marisa Lourenco, independent political analyst with a focus on Angola, Mozambique and South Africa.
