In northern Ghana there's concern that the long borders with Togo and Burkina Faso could allow radical jihadism to take root in communities there. Local people are being encouraged to organise 'watchdog committees', keeping an eye out for suspicious strangers. Authorities are dubbing this “See something, Say something”, an initiative that draws on local community knowledge to augment the work of security forces.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris reiterated the importance of standing up for LGBTQ+ rights as Ghana has seen an increase in proposed and passed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

"This is an issue that we consider, and I consider, to be a human rights issue. And that will not change," Harris said.

Plus, Harris was also asked about China's influence in African countries. She said her trip to Ghana and other countries in Africa is motivated by the importance of the direct relationship between the U.S. and Ghana. While she did not speak on China directly, she said the U.S. and the Biden-Harris Administration are committed to strengthening ties with Ghana.

The vice-president met with leaders and staff before sitting down with Akufo-Addo for a bilateral meeting. The White House said the aim of the meetings is to affirm the strength of the U.S.-Ghana bilateral relationship and the long-standing ties between the American and Ghanaian people.

An explosion at an oil terminal in Guinea's capital, Conakry, on Monday, killed at least 11 people and left 84 people injured, according to a senior police officer.

The blast occurred at the main oil terminal in the city and resulted in a huge fire and thick black smoke. The impact was felt in the Kaloum administrative district situated in the downtown area of Conakry, blowing out the windows of several nearby homes and forcing hundreds of people to flee.

Firefighters rushed to the area, while several tanker trucks left the depot, escorted by soldiers and police. The government has announced that an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the fire.

The junta has not given any reason for the act. It also asked the ministers to surrender their passports, and it has also sealed the country's borders.
