Algeria celebrated 60 years of independence from France on Tuesday with nationwide ceremonies, a pardon of 14,000 prisoners and its first military parade in decades. The events mark the country’s official declaration of independence on July 5, 1962, after a brutal seven-year war that ended 132 years of colonial rule. Opposition figures and pro-democracy activists called the elaborate celebrations an effort to distract attention from Algeria's economic and political troubles by glorifying the army, and called for the release of political prisoners. For more analysis, FRANCE 24 is joined by Jihane Boudiaf, a Research Analyst whose work contributes to several Country Risk teams at S&P Global Market Intelligence, covering sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East. "This is not so much about the pro-democracy movement or the FLN," explains Ms. Boudiaf. "I think that Algeria is displaying here this impressive military arsenal which is an important message that it wants to communicate regionally and internationally in this more challenging geopolitical context."

Burkina Faso's military leader Ibrahim Traore says elections can only be held, once the security situation stabilises.
Thousands have gathered in the capital to celebrate the military government's first year in power, days after another coup attempt failed.
Burkina Faso has continued to struggle, increasingly isolated after the coup and with swaths of the country in the hands of local al-Qaeda and ISIL affiliates.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports.

Burundi's outgoing Prime Minister welcomes his successor, Gervais Ndirakobuca
Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye replaced his prime minister and a top aide in a high-level political purge Wednesday after warning of a "coup" plot against him.

Security minister Gervais Ndirakobuca was sworn in before parliament as the new premier, capping a day of high drama in the troubled central #African nation.

He succeeds Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, who was sacked along with Ndayishimiye's civilian chief of staff General Gabriel Nizigama in the first major reshuffle at the top since the president took office a little over two years ago.

Lawmakers had approved the appointment of Ndirakobuca -- a former chief of Burundi's feared intelligence agency -- in a unanimous 113-0 vote at a hastily called parliamentary session earlier Wednesday.

Ndayishimiye, a 54-year-old former army general, gave no reasons for Bunyoni's dismissal, but last week he had warned of a coup plot against his regime.
