The Gambian government’s repression of the political opposition in the months prior to the December 1, 2016 presidential election threatens the fairness of the election, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.
The report, “More Fear than Fair: Gambia’s 2016 Presidential Election,” describes how the government of President Yayha Jammeh, who came to power in a 1994 coup, has used a crackdown on the opposition, domination of state media, and state resources for campaigning to ensure a political advantage in the election. Authorities have threatened, arbitrarily arrested, jailed and tortured members of opposition political parties. Since April, more than 90 opposition activists have been jailed for participating in peaceful protests, with 30 sentenced to three-year prison terms. Two opposition activists have died in custody.
Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, on Thursday held his first cabinet meeting since 2015 and on the back of a recent reshuffle. The event took place at the Unity Palace (presidency) in the capital Yaounde.
According to a statement on the website of the presidency, Biya's address to his appointees centered around security, decentralization, upcoming elections and the hosting of the African Cup of Nations among other issues.

Kenya is the original safari destination and remains one of the best places in Africa to see wild animals. Its bevy of iconic game reserves include the Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park and both east and West Tsavo. Every year, millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate across the Tanzanian border into southern Kenya on the annual Great Migration, one of nature's most spectacular events. Most overseas visitors enter Kenya through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport which is located in the capital city of Nairobi. Kenya Airways offers a direct flight to Nairobi from New York, while other major airlines that serve the airport include British Airways, Emirates, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airways, Air France and many others. As a matter of facts, Nairobi is one of the continent's biggest air travel hubs. Kenya Airways offers a full range of domestic flights as well.
Most nationalities will need a visa to enter Kenya, including visitors from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe. However, you can now apply for your visa online. The process is relatively quick and easy, and successful visas are valid for up to 90 days.
The best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to do while you're there. For safari-goers, the long dry season from June to early October offers the best wildlife sightings. August is generally the month to travel if you want to watch the herds of the Great Migration cross the Mara River. The dry seasons are also best for visits to the coast or hikes up Mount Kenya, while the short rains from late October to November are great for birding as they bring exciting migrant species from Europe and Asia.

World leaders are attending the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow, Scotland from 31 October to 12 November.
For this conference, 200 countries are being asked for their plans to cut emissions by 2030.
Extreme weather events linked to climate change - including heatwaves and floods - are intensifying, especially in Africa.
Young climate activists from the continent told us how climate change is affecting their communities, and what message they have for world leaders at COP26.
