Activism today can take many different forms. Sokeel Park works with defectors from North Korea to accelerate change in the dictatorship. Nimko Ali leads a global campaign to end the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation. Richard Ratcliffe campaigns for the release of his wife from an Iranian prison. Three different activists talk about their campaigns and what they think it takes to be an activist in the 21st century.

If you look at activism around the world there seems to be an amazing sort of flowering of different approaches being taken to tackle these deep-seated problems. What does it take to bring about change in today’s world?

Nimko Ali’s activism grew from her personal experience as a survivor of female genital mutilation or FGM.

Richard Ratcliffe became an activist in 2016 when his wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.

The most important thing is to keep that hope that the world can be different, the world should be different and, you know, by God will I make it.

<p>In this edition: African web users plead for Ebola serum; Reddit helps grieving father remember his son ; and a piano playing dog. </p><br />AFRICAN WEB USERS PLEAD FOR EBOLA SERUM<br />With the Ebola virus spreading dangerously across West Africa, claiming over 1,000 victims so far, African web users have taken to social networks to reach out to the international community for help. They want the serum that was used to treat two American doctors who had contracted the virus in Liberia to be sent over as soon as possible, an experimental treatment that helped stabilize the two volunteers. <br />African web users have been posting under the "GiveUsTheSerum" hashtag in their droves, saying they too have the right to receive treatment, the same treatment as westerners. The president of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also made an official request, which has since been approved by the US Food and Drug administration. They have authorized the Mapp Bio laboratory to export to West Africa despite the small supplies currently available. <br />And while the Ebola outbreak is a massive source of concern on social networks, some have shared some jokes about the prevention awareness campaigns, which urge people to avoid physical contact. Mauritius has sent a scientific mission to the Chagos Islands. The official reason for this boat trip – the first to be organised by Mauritius – is to map the reefs around the archipelago.

But this a highly political – some would say provocative move – by the Mauritian government.

Both the UK and Mauritius claim to hold sovereignty over the Chagos Islands but a recent maritime law tribunal of the United Nations has ruled that Britain has no sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.

The UK government disputes that but says it will give Chagos back to Mauritius when it’s no longer needed for security purposes. America has a military base on one of the islands .
