Hugh Masekela is a world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer and defiant political voice. With a career that spans over 5 decades, Masekela remains a driving cultural force at home and abroad, as well as an advocate for justice and equality globally.
Thandika Mkandawire is the inaugural holder of LSE's chair in African Development. He is based in LSE’s Department of International Development.
The Steve Biko Memorial Lecture, Europe, a partnership between LSE and the Steve Biko Foundation, is a platform for African thought leaders, policy makers and activists and to reflect on the past, present and future of Africa.

The most successful business leaders always have their own compelling philosophies, but all too often the thoughts and ideologies of high-profile African American leaders are forgotten or passed over.
The ideas and practices of these visionary leaders, sometimes heralded within their own communities, are often ignored by mainstream media and, over time, many of their contributions are forgotten.
Leadership experts Leon C. Prieto and Simone T.A. Phipps re-light these extinguished torches reflecting on some of the leading black business pioneers of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Exploring views that embrace the traditional African philosophies of cooperation, this study of such influential figures brings to light how heavily the "golden age of black business" was impacted by the "cooperative advantage" possessed by leaders such as Charles Clinton Spalding, John Merrick, Alonzo Herndon, Annie Turnbo-Malone, Madam C.J. Walker, and Maggie Walker.
Ultimately, what Prieto and Phipps bring to light is the common thread that pulls these leaders together - namely, the love they had for their communities, and what they show is that contemporary entrepreneurs of African decent would do well to regain a cooperative advantage in order to achieve the levels of success that existed in the past.

Dr. Shewayish shows how public health is an essential component of economic prosperity. This is at no time a more poignant argument than in the midst of the current pandemic, where it is clear that the key to economic recovery is to vanquish the coronavirus outbreak. As we have seen in the Spring and early Summer of 2020, infectious diseases can affect a large swath of the business sector, from agriculture, to manufacturing, transportation, hospitality/travel, and many others. Some industries may have a business model that is incompatible with an infection outbreak. Others may ride the wave of increased demand that occurs as a result of the disease's impact on a society. A disease outbreak may also cause individuals to withdraw from the economy due to fear, job loss, or reduced services. Investing in public health is an endeavor that pays countless dividends. As the pandemic shows, societies around the world need to do more to invest in the health of their populations and in preparing for the next outbreak that may impact us.
