Botswana is a country the size of France but with barely two percent of its population. It is dominated by the flat, arid Kalahari so is a land of little water. Wherever water does appear, it has a great impact on the environment. This series looks at three unique habitats in Botswana that stand in stark contrast to the Kalahari: the sacred Tswapong Hills contain spectacular cliffs and teem with wildlife including baboons, leopards and hyenas; the Makgadikgadi Basin is a mecca for flamingos and pelicans as well as home to the magnificent Kalahari lions; the Okavango's flood plains are home to many of Africa's big predators and the indigenous semi-nomadic tribes in whose hands its future rests.
This film was first broadcast: 1998
