Gabon Coup: Rwanda, Cameroon Reshuffle Military Position | The Conversation | 01-09-23
In light of the recent surge in military coups across Africa, leaders in Rwanda and Cameroon have taken proactive measures to address the growing instability. These actions come in the wake of a coup in Gabon that ousted President Ali Bongo from power.
President Paul Biya of Cameroon responded by initiating a significant restructuring within the Ministry of Defense. This restructuring involved key changes in various military positions, indicating a strategic move to bolster the country's defense apparatus and address emerging security challenges.
In a parallel move, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda approved the retirement of 83 high-ranking military officers. Among them was senior presidential advisor James Kabarebe. This decision is seen as a response to the escalating instability caused by military coups in different parts of Africa.
Furthermore, discussions and meetings were convened to explore opportunities for strengthening defense cooperation between Rwanda and Cameroon. These collaborative efforts aim to enhance regional security and stability in the face of the coup-related crises.
It's worth noting that both President Kagame and President Biya have held prolonged presidencies, with Kagame in office since 2000 and Biya since coming to power in a coup in 1982. This longevity in leadership underscores the significance of their proactive response to the evolving security landscape on the continent.
