The Zambian economy was already ailing and fell into a deep recession when the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. Some political writers, commentators and academics say the election of Hakainde Hichilema as the country's new president has guided Zambia toward economic recovery since taking office in August 2021.
