Morocco will begin manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines (Sinopharm). The local pharmaceutical group SOTHEMA will soon produce the Chinese vaccine Sinopharm. The initial phase is to develop and produce 5 million doses per month. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was signed last Monday, July 5th, 2021 between the local pharmaceutical group Sothema, the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopahrm and Recipharm, the Swedish company specialized in the development and manufacturing of drugs and vaccines. The virtual meeting was chaired by H.M. King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Fez.


This large-scale project will put Morocco at the forefront of the global producer of vaccines for the kingdom of Morocco and Africa. The Sinopharm CEO, Liu Jingzhen, stated through an online platform during the signing ceremony, that this project will strengthen the relationship between Morocco and China. He also conveyed the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, best wishes for the Moroccan-Chinese cooperation related to the manufacturing and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.

At this business meeting, the Moroccan pharmaceutical firm, Sothema along with the Sweden-headquartered contract development and manufacturing organization Recipharm, signed a memorandum of understanding enabling Sothema to soon began fill-finish manufacturing of the anti-Covid19 vaccine in addition to other vaccines for Morocco and Africa.

The CEO of Recipharm, Marc Funk, stressed that the project of the company Recipharm in Morocco aims to increase access to current and future immunization campaigns. He added, that Morocco will be "the first center of excellence for the filling of parenteral injectable vaccines at the service of the Moroccan people and the African continent". The project will go through three phases from which will evolve from fill-filling to manufacturing of complete vaccines and biotherapies through partnerships in the field which goes in line with the vision and strategy of the Royal initiatives and the Kingdom’s health strategy.

Sweden’s Recipharm operates worldwide, namely in Sweden, the US, the UK, Germany, India, and Israel. Morocco is the first and newly added plant on the African continent.

Morocco was ranked 22 on the international level in terms of vaccinations roll-out, thus placing it at the top in Africa. Followed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab, Israel. Algeria ranked at 163 with only 75,000 doses given so far.
