On Saturday, December 2nd, 2023, Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo officially confirmed that gunfire and clashes that had erupted in Bissau, the capital of the West African nation on Friday, December 1st, 2023 were elements of an attempted coup. President Embalo made this announcement after extensive consultation with security forces, confirming fears about the newest threat to democracy in the increasingly turbulent and coup-prone region of West Africa. Rumours of the attempted coup first broke out after clashes between the National Guard and presidential Guard special forces erupted in Bissau on Thursday night and continued on Friday after National Guard soldiers released two top government officials jailed in connection with a corruption investigation
Embalo, who was in Dubai attending the COP28 climate conference, arrived in Bissau on Saturday and revealed that it was the "attempted coup d'etat" that had prevented him from returning. "I can assure you that the events of December 1, 2023, are yet another attempted coup and those responsible will suffer serious consequences," Embalo told journalists after arriving from Dubai. During a visit to the National Guard command in Bissau, Embalo further revealed that Colonel Victor Tchongo, the head of the National Guard, was the mastermind of the coup. Calm returned to the nation on Friday following the announcement that the army had captured Tchongo and the security presence in Bissau was reduced on Saturday, although soldiers remained visible surrounding key buildings such as the presidential palace, the judicial police headquarters, and various ministries. According to the President, Tchongo has been dismissed and “will pay dearly” for the attempt to depose him. “You are all betrayed by your commander … (and) this is why we advise you to distance yourself from politicians and do your service to the nation,” he told officers during his visit
