Niger: The ruling junta said late Thursday it had thwarted an overnight attempt by deposed President Mohamed Bazoum to escape detention with his family, nearly three months after he was placed under house arrest in the wake of a military coup.



U.S.: The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia, Catriona Laing, told the Security Council Thursday that “Conflicts in Somalia continue to take a heavy toll on civilians. Last year, we saw the largest increase in civilian casualties since 2017. Sadly, early data indicate a similar trend in 2023.”



U.S.: A U.N. spokesperson said the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs facilitated 44 trucks with relief supplies for Kordofan and Darfur Wednesday, as six months of deadly war rages on.



Senegal: Business owners worry for their livelihood in the usually bustling port city of Ziguinchor, the capital of the Casamance region, because the Dakar-Ziguinchor sea link has been closed since June 1. The line was suspended without any official explanation following the conviction of opposition politician Ousmane Sonko in a moral corruption scandal.
