For the past four years South Sudan has been torn apart by civil war – and the situation in the country is desperate. Famine rages across all conflict zones and the first victims are often displaced people. As battles are lost on the ground, families are forced to leave everything behind to try to survive. FRANCE 24 reporters Charles Emptaz and Olivier Jobard spoke to people in the eastern rebel-held Jonglei region as government troops led an offensive to take the regional capital of Waat.
In South Sudan, the rebels are desperately waiting for rain. The rainy season is coming soon, which should stop the advance of government tanks and troops who have taken control of Waat, the regional capital. The battle has led to an exodus of tens of thousands of civilians from the Nuer ethnic group, the main supporters of the rebels.

Benjamin and Awad run Sudan's national film archive. The two men, who've worked together for more than 40 years, are devoted to protecting their country's visual memories.

Home to some 13,000 films, the archive preserves pivotal moments of Sudan's turbulent history, and is one of the largest in Africa.

But the archive is in a fragile state. Following years of neglect and poor storage, many film reels are turning to dust in Sudan's unforgiving tropical climate.

The two friends are determined to turn it around and embark on a mission to save the old films. Will they succeed in preserving Sudan's visual history for future generations before it's too late?

يحكي الفيلم قصة 4 سودانيين من مختلف نواحي الحياة الذين توجهوا - من خلال مختلف الظروف ولأسباب مختلفة ، توجهت نحو التطرف العنيف. تتداخل قصصهم طوال الفيلم ، لكن الشخصيات لا تلتقي أبداً. بناء على أحداث حقيقية ، يعرض الفيلم وجها إنسانيا لآفة التطرف العنيف بهدف رفع مستوى الوعي حول كيفية تنامي التطرف العنيف واستكشاف كيف يمكن للمرء، حسب هذه المسارات الشخصية، أن يذهب في أي اتجاه.

على هذه الخلفية، أطلقت الهيئة الوطنية لمكافحة الإرهاب بالإشتراك مع وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي دراسة شاملة حول هذه القضية الى جانب إنتاج فلم قصير لتوعية أصحاب المصلحة بخطورة هذه القضية في السودان. إذ حددت نتائج الدراسة أصل المشكلة التي شهدت طيفاً واسعا من المتحدثين والأطراف المتأثرة ولذلك ستعمل النتائج على تبصير الإستجابة البرامجية لمشروع الشراكة من أجل مكافحة التطرف العنيف مستقبلاً.

The story of 4 Sudanese from different walks of life who, through various circumstances and for different reasons, are drawn towards violent radicalization. Their stories intercut throughout the film but the characters never meet. Based on real events, the film puts a human face to the scourge of violent extremism.
It’s modest ambition is to raise awareness on how violent extremism grows from intimate personal stories, and to explore how, depending on these personal paths, one can go either way.

The Sudan National Commission for Countering Terrorism (SNTCC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have officially launched the Partnering Against Violent Extremism project (PVE) amidst prominent presence from high level Government officials.

As part of this commitment, SNCCT and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sudan have joined hands in preventing violent extremism through the PAVE - Partnering against Violent Extremism PAVE programme. PAVE witnesses not only the efforts of the Government of Sudan and UNDP, but also the establishment of partnerships with civil society, NGOs, women and youth organizations community based organizations, religious institutions, universities, and the international community –spearheaded by Canadian and Japanese efforts- in order to address the growing threat of violent extremism.

SAMBALA, a new South Sudanese movie on addressing domestic violence features some of the most talented movie casts in the film and movie industry in South Sudan. Sambala, the main character, found himself at a crossroads having to decide between continuing with his education or giving it up in support of the love of his life, Likiso. With limited resources, he sacrificed his university tuition to help pay for his girlfriend’s fees. As a hardworking young man, Sambala remained home hustling to ensure that he is able to raise enough funds to meet all the school requirements for Likiso’s learning process. Three years later, Likiso graduates from the University with Honors and secured a good paying job. She happily married Sambala, the young man who sacrificed all that he had for her sake. As time goes by and due to bad peer pressure and influence, Likiso had a change of heart, assaulted, and threw out her husband, Sambala, out of the house, and eventually abandoned Sambala for a “wealthy and presentable” guy. It turned out that the new wealthy guy Likiso took for a husband is nothing but a fraud star. As for Sambala, like they always say, “Once a door closes another one opens”.
