Both are separated by that magnificent Congo River, the second longest river in Africa, second biggest in the world by discharge volume, and deepest river in the world. The capitals of both countries, the aforementioned Kinshasa and Brazzaville, both sit across from each other along that river, as matter of fact, less than 1 mile, or 1.6 km apart. They are the closest capital cities between two sovereign countries in the world. Well, second closest if you count Vatican City and Rome.
Also, Kinshasa is by far the largest city in the DRC, with more than 12 million people, which is around 13% of the country’s population, and Brazzaville is by far the largest city in the Congo Republic, with more than 1.8 million people, which is around 1/3 of the country’s population.
Despite being so close to one another, there are no bridges connecting Kinshasa and Brazzaville. Instead, the most common way to get back and forth between the two cities is by boat, crossing the Congo River, and thousands cross it every day. That said, you can also travel by plane- apparently 5-minute flights go back and forth between the two. However, a road/rail bridge that links the two cities is currently in the works, and construction should be resuming soon after this video releases. The metropolitan area of both Kinshasa and Brazzaville, by the way, makes up the third largest urban area in all of Africa.
Due to the legacy of foreign influence, residents of both speak French. While French is the official language, residents speak many different languages in both, depending on what region you’re in. An estimated 242 languages are spoken in the DRC, but its four national languages are Kikongo, Lingala, Swahili, and Tshiluba. The Congo Republic has two national languages- Kituba and also Lingala.

In the remote hills of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Al Jazeera has gained access to bases abandoned by the defeated M23 rebels. Its fighters fled from their last positions on Tuesday, signalling a final defeat and an end to the 20 month uprising against the government. The conflict forced tens of thousands of people from their homes and led to the intervention of a UN force. Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb has this exclusive report.
M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are reportedly close to taking a key strategic town, eight months into their latest offensive against the government.
They are just outside Sake, on the main east-west highway connecting the country's second-biggest city Goma with the capital, Kinshasa.
More than half a million people have fled M23's advance in the last eight months and more are fleeing now as the fighting approaches Goma.

In DR Congo, the regional force deployed by East African nations to stop the M23 rebels' advance in the east of the country is coming under scrutiny. While the regional force maintains that the rebels are gradually withdrawing from the territories they conquered, dubious Congolese authorities are demanding a "truthful discussion" on the mandate of the East African Community's force. The Democratic Republic of Congo's military has launched an operation against a Ugandan rebel group who call themselves, "The Allied Democratic Forces", commonly known as the ADF. The ADF is suspected of killing 15 Tanzanian UN peacekeepers in December.
Troops are targeting members of the ADF near the town of Beni, in Congo's North Kivu province.

Five thousand diggers pack tightly together at the bottom of a crater in southeastern DR Congo, swinging hammers and picks to prise chunks of speckled blue-gold ore from the earth. The huge pit in Shabara, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Kolwezi, is home to cobalt - a strategic metal found in abundance in the impoverished central African nation. But it's also emblematic of a headache. The mining has been carrying on for years in flagrant violation of DRC laws and in defiance of the site's owner, a subsidiary of mining and commodities giant Glencore.
