In this video, I am trying to find a way to get around the DRC - via the Angolan enclave called Cabinda. But, due to a broken crane, I can't take the normal ferry and have to take the cargo boat. However that boat doesn't run on a schedule and only goes if enough cargo is booked for it. Because of that, it often doesn't run for two weeks. I am very anxious to get out of Cabinda and do not want to risk getting stuck there for two weeks...

The official title of the Belgian kings is “King of the Belgians.” In Belgium, there is a difference between the titles “King of Belgium” and the “King of the Belgians.” The first suggests that the monarch is the owner of all of the country's land. The second title implies that he simply “reigns” over the Belgians in the constitutional monarchy that's existed in the country since it separated from Holland and the “United Kingdom of the Netherlands” in 1830. The Belgian king, and its been a king, not a queen, since independence, was never an absolute monarch, though in the 19th century, the king had considerable more power and influence than King Philippe does today.

The problem for Leopold was that he really wanted to be that king – you know, the “your wish is my command, Sire” type king, and he could not be that kind of a king to the Belgians, who had gone through much debate, internal strife and some bloodshed to prevent that kind of absolute monarchy in Belgium.

Much of Western Europe was going through the “Second Age of Imperialism” in the latter part of the 19th century. Great Britain's empire spanned the globe – the largest empire the world has ever seen. The French controlled a great deal of Africa and parts of the Middle East. Italy had a small African empire. Holland had extensive colonies in the Pacific, most notably today's Indonesia. Even declining Spain and Portugal had colonies in Africa and the Far East in the late 1800s.

Some in Belgium call Leopold II “The Great Builder,” for in Belgium, he sponsored and promoted the building of new roads, public buildings and a variety of public works, many of which are still in existence. Many in the country believe that that was his purpose in attempting to gain the Congo River area for Belgium – to improve and modernize the vast forested territory. He also wanted to spread the Christian faith and to bring Western culture and technology to the area.

(Goma, July 30, 2020) – Criminal gangs have kidnapped for ransom at least 170 people near the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo between April 2017 and March 2020, Human Rights Watch said today. Small groups armed with guns and machetes have beaten, tortured, and murdered hostages, raping women and girls, who make up more than half of them, while using threats to extort money from their families.

The UN has been asked to leave the Democratic Republic of Congo after a peacekeeping mission left dozens dead.

Peacekeepers and an 11-year-old child were among those killed during a protest against the UN's mission in Goma.

The government has since joined calls for the mission to end, but fears suggest the UN leaving could have a big impact on the humanitarian efforts in one of the poorest countries on the planet.

Blood in the Mobile is a 2010 documentary film by Danish film director Frank Piasecki Poulsen. The film addresses the issue of conflict minerals by examining illegal cassiterite mining in the North-Kivu province in eastern DR Congo. In particular, it focuses on the cassiterite mine in Bisie.[1]

The film is co-financed by Danish, German, Finnish, Hungarian and Irish television, as well as the Danish National film board.

The film premiered in Denmark on September 1, 2010. During the making of the film Frank Piasecki Poulsen is working with communications professional and new media entrepreneur Mikkel Skov Petersen on the online campaign of the same name.

The campaign is addressing Poulsen and Petersens notion of the responsibility of the manufacturers of mobile phones on the situation in war torn eastern Congo. The project is collaborating with NGOs like Dutch-based Make It Fair and British-based Global Witness who are also engaged in changing the conduct of Western companies regarding the industrial use of minerals of unknown origin.

The cassiterite dug out in the illegal mines in North-Kivu is according to Danish corporate monitor organization Danwatch [2] primarily purchased as tin by the electronics industry after processing in East Asia.

Apart from trying to raise awareness of the issue of illegal mining and alleged lack of corporate social responsibility from the mobile phone industry, the campaign is an attempt to experiment with new ways of building an audience and create additional funding for documentary films.

The production of the film and the campaign is run in association with Danish new media company Spacesheep, founded in 2009 by Poulsen and Petersen in association with major Danish independent TV and film production company Koncern.
