According to a decree read out on national television, Prime Minister Ali Mahaman will lead the 21-member government, with generals from the new military governing council heading the defence and interior ministries.

President Bola Tinubu has also directed the opening of Nigeria's land and air borders with the Republic of Niger and the lifting of other sanctions against the country with immediate effect.
In a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, this directive is in compliance with the decisions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, at its extraordinary summit held last month in Abuja where the leaders agreed to lift economic sanctions against the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.

The new military leader of Niger, General Tchiani, has displayed a clear lack of interest in Western countries and their affairs. According to recent reports, General Tchiani outright refused to meet with American officials sent by US President Joe Biden to Niger.

The United States delegation, during their recent diplomatic visit in Niger, faced an unexpected setback as they were unable to meet with General Tchiani, the head of state. Despite their best efforts, the delegation was forced to extend their stay by an additional day in the hopes of securing a meeting. Unfortunately, even after the extension, they were still not received by General Tchiani on Thursday, which led to the premature end of their visit.

Just imagine all their discussions about America’s future relations with Niger were held with the Nigérien PM Ali Lamine Zeine. I can tell you the implications of this, but I leave it to your own imagination.

And you know the United States currently maintains an active military presence in Niger, with one thousand troops and a drone base stationed in the country. However, there is growing public concern about the necessity of their continued deployment, and recent developments suggest that the American military's days in Niger may be numbered. The proposed creation of an Alliance of Sahel States force, in particular, threatens to undermine American influence and authority in the region. Additionally, the recent decision by the head of state to refuse a visit from an American delegation is a clear indication of the opposition and pushback that the American military presence is facing. It is becoming increasingly clear that the future of the American military in Niger is uncertain, and that its continued presence may be unsustainable.

This was the second time for the officials visit to Niger in the space of three months. The visit, according to USA, was intended to "continue the discussions initiated since August with the military regarding a return to the path of democracy and the future of our security and development partnership."
