There has been a new wave of anti-government protests in Togo. Demonstrators are calling for an overhaul of the political system and an end to the ruling family who has been in power for 50 years.

But the president is showing little interest in vacating his seat after 16 people were killed in protests that began three months ago.

Togo's Prime minister, Selorm Klassou, on Tuesday led a pro-government protest held in the capital Lome. He was joined by other government functionaries as they paraded the streets.

The move is seen as a response to protests calling for an end to the Gnassingbe family dynasty that has been running Togo for the last five decades. Activists, however, noted that the protest was nothing compared to that of the oppositions' in terms of numbers.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has finally spoken on the political crisis in Togo urging the government and opposition to dialogue on necessary constitutional reforms.

Head of the ECOWAS Commission, Marcel Alain de Souza, was in the Togolese capital, Lome, on Wednesday. During his visit, he met with President Faure Gnassingbé before meeting with the opposition leaders and other religious leaders.

After 15 years in power, President Faure Gnassingbe is expected to secure a fourth term - further extending his family's rule, which has lasted more than half a century.

At least 80 opposition protesters have been arrested after two days of demonstration demanding the departure of President Faure Gnassingbe.

According to the Civil Service Minister Gilbert Bawara, the people were arrested Thursday night for "preparing to commit violent acts, vandalise shops", AFP reports.

Four people were killed in Togo on Wednesday in clashes between security forces and demonstrators calling for an end to a half century of Gnassingbe family rule, the security minister said.
