파푸아뉴기니, 경찰 파업 사이 대규모 폭동으로 최소 16명 사망
We begin today in Papua New Guinea, where the prime minister declared a 14-day state of emergency in the country's capital on Thursday, after at least 16 people were killed in rioting.
Papua New Guinea authorities reported on Thursday that 9 people died in the capital Port Moresby, with a further 7 killed in the city of Lae, amid widespread looting and arson in riots which began on Wednesday.
Prime Minister James Marape said on Thursday that more than 1,000 soldiers are on standby "to step in wherever necessary" as shops and cars were torched and looted. He also suspended Papua New Guinea's chief of police and top officials in the finance and treasury departments.
Police and public sector workers went on a strike on Wednesday over a pay cut, which the government claimed to be a administrative glitch. The unrest follows the growing tension over high unemployment and rising costs.

But there are two stages involved in the review process- the verification of the identity of current voters and the latter stage …

There has been violence in Guinea ahead of a controversial referendum on constitutional amendments critics say will be used to allow 82-year-old President Alpha Conde to extend his time in office with a third term.
Despite attacks on several polling sites, alleged irregularities in voter lists, and concerns about the spread of coronavirus, the government is still urging people to vote.

Guinea-Bissau’s parliament is scheduled to reopen before the end of this month, following a historic legislative election in June. For the first time in the country’s history, the parliamentary majority will be held by a coalition of opposition parties. While this may be a positive sign for democracy, it is a risky situation in a country known for its coups d’états. FRANCE 24's correspondents Aminatou Diallo, Mbaye Ndir and Sam Bradpiece report.

Several private media and online outlets in Guinea have staged a news blackout in protest against a crackdown imposed by the ruling military.
That comes as tensions have risen between the army and the opposition in recent weeks.
The military overthrew President Alpha Conde in 2021 and has promised a transition to civilian rule by the end of 2024, but the long wait has frustrated civil society groups.
Al Jazeera’s Raheela Mahomed reports.
