#Eritrea #Asmara #Tigrai #Mekele #Ethiopia #Addisabeba #sudan #somalia ‘Jstudio ’ is one branch of the three YouTube Channels under this name run by an Executive Committee team of dedicated Eritrean Journalists and writers in Exile. We have devoted members of PEN International and other well-founded global human rights organizations in our vibrant and goal-oriented group. We all stand for responsible free speech and peaceful co-existence which we are utterly denied in where we call home, Eritrea!
Our main motto is to cover: history, politics, current affairs, culture, art of our home country Eritrea in particular; and our war-torn region in general. This is to create awareness on our younger generation and to help them to hold their hopes and aspirations up and to prepare to co-exist in harmony with the free and democratic hosting societies in our Diaspora communities. Although, we have thousands of followers, mainly young Eritreans and Ethiopians, as it’s indicated in our subscribers’ rate, but we also face challenges from the supporters of the regime in Eritrea who always wanted to silence our critical voice!

Eritrea, a small nation on the Horn of Africa, is one of the most isolated countries in the world. It is also one of the most secretive, and has been duly nicknamed the “African North Korea”. What is everyday life like under the dictatorship? Why do so many Eritreans flee the country in a bid to reach Europe? Our reporters Nicolas Germain and Romeo Langlois were given exceptional permission to report from Eritrea, which ranks last on the Reporters Without Borders press freedom index.
It's very rare for Western journalists to go to Eritrea. FRANCE 24 has just spent a week there. Although often accompanied by government “minders”, our reporters tried to find out why thousands of Eritreans flee their country every month, despite there being neither war nor famine. Along with Syria and Afghanistan, Eritrea is one of the most highly represented countries among migrants trying to reach Europe.

This little-known East African nation was born in 1991 after a thirty-year armed struggle for independence against Ethiopia. Another bloody border dispute between 1998 and 2000 left some 80,000 people dead. Ever since then, Ethiopia has occupied part of Eritrea, which claims it is threatened by its vast neighbour.
The Eritrean government has therefore implemented an indefinite national military service, which is compulsory. This poorly paid service, which can last more than a decade, is the main reason why so many young people try to flee. They also want to escape poverty and the authoritarian Marxist regime of President Isaias Afwerki, the independence hero who has been in power for the last 25 years.
Our reporters met ordinary Eritreans, members of the government and the government's opponents in exile in a bid to understand this isolated, fascinating nation.

Riots erupted as two rival groups of Eritreans clashed with each other and then with police officials in The Hague in the Netherlands on February 17. Several cars and police vehicles were set on fire near the Opera House building around the Fruitweg. To quell the unrest, police used tear gas to disperse the rioters who threw stones and bricks at them, the Associated Press reported. Images and videos on social media showed dozens of men in a street clashing with the police.

Thousands of Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia's conflict-hit northern region of Tigray have run out of food, the UN's refugee agency, UNHCR, has said.

It appealed for urgent access to the region to provide emergency assistance.

Communications and aid access have been blocked since the start of the conflict between the federal government fighters loyal to Tigray leaders a month ago.

Nearly 100,000 Eritrean refugees are in Tigray. They fled political persecution and compulsory military service.

In October 2023, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, raised fears of a new war with neighbouring Eritrea. In a high-profile televised speech, he claimed that Ethiopia should assert its right to access the Red Sea. Raising fears that Ethiopia was preparing for conflict, Eritrean forces moved close to the border. But while Abiy Ahmed has now insisted that Ethiopia wouldn't resort to armed force, many worry that a new war may be brewing between the two countries, especially as they have a long history of conflict.

Eritrea and Ethiopia have a long and complex history. However, while Ethiopia was never colonised, Eritrea was seized by Italy in the nineteenth century. However, after the Second World War, it was placed under British trusteeship pending a decision on its future. But opinion was divided. While many wanted it to become independent, others wanted it to unite with neighbouring Ethiopia. Ultimately, the United Nations General Assembly voted to create a federation. However, this was short-lived. As tensions grew, Ethiopia needed the federal system and annexed Eritrea. This led to a long campaign against Ethiopian control - the Eritrean War of Independence. This eventually ended when the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) teamed up with the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) to overthrow Ethiopia's military government in 1991. Two years later, Eritrea became independent. Relations soon collapsed between the two partners as Eritrea claimed territory along the border, including Tigray. This led to a new war in 1998-2000. But while the sides eventually agreed on arbitration and established a Boundary Commission, Ethiopia rejected its findings until 2018, when a new prime minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali, took over. Determined to push back on Tigrayan/TPLF power in Ethiopia, he agreed to the award, winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Meanwhile, relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara continued to improve, especially as Eritrea's leader Isaias Afwerki, a fierce opponent of the TPLF, assisted Ethiopia in its civil war against Tigray. But since the end of the war, relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia have soured again. As Ethiopia grows economically, it is trying to gain direct access to the Red Sea. And it's this that's now sparking fears of a new war.

Eritrea is the most demonized and sanctioned African country. Why? It's not human rights abuses because there are far worse governments the U.S. supports. Eritrea also has better social indicators of health care and education than its pro-U.S. counterparts. Washington’s real problem with Eritrea is that it’s an independent country that refuses to be a client state that serves Western interests.

To help break it down, Rania Khalek was joined by Eugene Puryear, a journalist for Breakthrough News and host of The Punch Out podcast.

This clip is from a longer interview with Eugene on the conflict in Ethiopia. You can watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/T2deexE3AxU

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape — controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.

We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities — because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.

People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.

We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.
