528 supporters of Egypt's ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi have been sentenced to death, convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property. On Friday, Democratic Senator Bob Menendez and his wife were accused by federal prosecutors of accepting bribes in exchange for using his position to increase U.S. assistance to Egypt and to do favors for three New Jersey businessmen, including Wael Hana, an Egyptian American who ran a lucrative business certifying halal meat exports. “Egypt is a major meat importer,” says Lina Attalah, publisher of the independent Cairo-based news website Mada Masr that investigated the monopolization of halal certification in 2019. “What was straightforward financial corruption had this major political tentacle that affects bilateral relations to a great extent.” Menendez has stepped down as head of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, but as he faces growing pressure to resign from his role as senator, New Jersey-based reporter Bob Hennelly says, the state’s political establishment that enabled him for years now appears ready to let him fend for himself. Democrats “really can’t afford to have Bob Menendez hanging around,” says Hennelly, who reports that Menendez has faced serious corruption charges in the past but retained his Senate seat. “This is what he does.”

Satellite Image Reveals Egypt's Border Wall Construction Near Gaza Strip

In the scrubland near Egypt’s border with Gaza, something big is happening. A massive walled buffer zone is quietly being built, but not many are talking about it.

Footage from a human rights organisation shows bulldozers clearing land and workers putting up a large concrete barrier.

This all started about a week ago, around February 5th, according to pictures taken from space.

If the buffer zone, extending from the Gaza border to the Mediterranean Sea, is finished, it will completely surround the Egyptian-Rafah border crossing complex.

It is estimated that the build is roughly a 8-square-mile (20-square-kilometer) walled enclosure being built in the area that could accommodate over 100,000 people.

The Israeli army says Gaza’s parliament and civilian ministries are legitimate targets in its offensive against Hamas. “If there’s a gunman firing rockets from there, it turns into a military target,” Israeli army spokesperson Richard Hecht said. The Israeli air force has said it is continuing its aerial barrage as officials added over 1,000 strikes have already taken place on Gaza. The Israeli military also said it destroyed a mosque which it said was "housing weapons" for Hamas. A senior Hamas official has said allies like Iran and Hezbollah will join fighting "if Gaza is subjected to a war of annihilation”. An Israeli military official has suggested that Palestinians fleeing its air attacks in the Gaza Strip head to Egypt. Watch the video to find out more.

Thousands of people in Gaza have gathered at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, as diplomatic efforts continue to open it before Israel starts its expected ground operation.

But the United Nations said there had been no progress in negotiations on reopening of the crossing.

Cairo blames Israel for "not co-operating".

Egypt believes that displacement could bring an end to the existence of Palestine. As Israel's offensive continues, fears of a spillover of the war grow. Egypt is reportedly preparing an accommodation area along its border for fleeing Palestinians. This is in anticipation of an influx of arrivals, should Israel launch its ground offensive in Rafah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said safe passage would be provided to more than a million refugees in Rafah. But the UN doubts displaced civilians would be able to evacuate to a safe place. It has warned that a military operation in Rafah would result in an "Egyptian nightmare". Sarah Coates reports.

The leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has been in Egypt for talks on halting the fighting with Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has again ruled out a cease-fire until Hamas is eliminated and the remaining hostages are freed. Several countries including Germany classify Hamas as a terrorist organization. Meanwhile there's been no let up in attacks on the Palestinian territory.

We spoke live to Efrat Machi-kawa, from Israel. Her uncle, Gilad Moses, is still being held hostage in Gaza, after being kidnapped during the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7. His partner Efrat was killed in that attack. His wife and his partner's daughter and two grand-daughters were among the hostages released during the week-long cease-fire. The Islamic Jihad militant group has just released a video showing Gilad in captivity - the first sign of life since his abduction.
