High tensions, demonstrations, deadly clashes with riot police - all because of language. It's happening in the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon. The unrest began with lawyers protesting against the use of French in courts, soon followed by teachers who have been on strike ever since. They blame Cameroon's central government for imposing the domination of the French language. Our correspondents report.

A deadly attack at a school in southwestern Cameroon has made headlines worldwide and brought fresh attention to a protracted conflict between government forces and secessionists.
At least seven children were killed and several others hurt when attackers with guns and machetes stormed the Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in Kumba, on October 24. No group has yet claimed responsibility, but the government blames Anglophone separatists who have sought a boycott on education in the region.
The assault horrified people across Cameroon, many of whom added the hashtag #EndAnglophoneCrisis to social media posts urging the government and Anglophone secessionists in the predominantly English-speaking Southwest and Northwest regions to find common ground. At least 3,000 people have been killed in violence by separatists and government forces since October 2017, when Anglophone secessionists self-declared the English-speaking state of Ambazonia in response to years of marginalisation by the Francophone majority.
We’ll trace the fault lines in Cameroon and see if there is any prospect of peace.

While the eyes of the world are on the deadly conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
There's another conflict that has been going on for years unnoticed in Africa.
The civil war in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions have claimed the lives of over 6,000 since it flared up seven years ago.
Earlier this year Amnesty International urged Cameroonian authorities to end the violence and thoroughly investigate the killings, acts of torture and other atrocities committed in the region.
However, the Cameroonian government has denied wrongdoing.
South African-based Cameroonian Journalist Hansel Ngala says Journalists from Anglophone regions are also not safe in his home country as they are being targeted.

Ten Cameroonian separatists have been handed life sentences by a military court sitting in the capital, Yaounde.
The convicts included the leader of the most known separatist group, the Southern Cameroon National Council, SCNC, Sisiku Ayuk Tabe.
They were arrested in January 2018 at a hotel in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, and were subsequently deported to Cameroon. Yaounde had in November 2017 "issued international arrest warrants":https://[a]www.africanews.com%2F2017%2F11%2F09%2Fcameroon-issues-interna%E2%80%A6[/a]
