Algeria celebrated 60 years of independence from France on Tuesday with nationwide ceremonies, a pardon of 14,000 prisoners and its first military parade in decades. The events mark the country’s official declaration of independence on July 5, 1962, after a brutal seven-year war that ended 132 years of colonial rule. Opposition figures and pro-democracy activists called the elaborate celebrations an effort to distract attention from Algeria's economic and political troubles by glorifying the army, and called for the release of political prisoners. For more analysis, FRANCE 24 is joined by Jihane Boudiaf, a Research Analyst whose work contributes to several Country Risk teams at S&P Global Market Intelligence, covering sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East. "This is not so much about the pro-democracy movement or the FLN," explains Ms. Boudiaf. "I think that Algeria is displaying here this impressive military arsenal which is an important message that it wants to communicate regionally and internationally in this more challenging geopolitical context."

The UN Security Council is set to vote in a few hours on a resolution demanding a cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas, which is labeled as a terrorist organization in many countries. The Algeria sponsored plan, representing several Arab nations, calls for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire as well as the release of all hostages. The US has said it will veto that resolution, and has instead proposed its own. It calls for a temporary cease-fire linked to the release of hostages. It is as yet unclear if the US resolution will be put to a vote as well.

Packed shoulder to shoulder, hundreds of thousands of Algerian men and women, young and old overtook Algiers last Friday, calling for the ouster of president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has held onto power for 20 years, and whose party, the FLN, ruled for 56. “There will be no fifth term, oh Bouteflika!,” they chanted, marching hand in hand. Some broke into song and dance, others stood draped in the familiar green, red and white of their nation's flag.

Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf called for international help to prevent a return to violence after 14 years of civil war in her country.

The first woman elected president of an African nation addressed the European Parliament in September 2006, just eight months after taking office.

She said Liberians were committed to putting the conflict - which ended in 2003 - behind them. She talked about the devastation left by war, the challenges of rebuilding and reconciliation, and the need for international help for sustainable development.

Liberian president George Weah has been hailed for his sportsmanship for conceding to his rival in the presidential race - from across the political divide and the region. The 57-year-old's phone call to congratulate Joseph Boakai on Friday night has saved the country, which has a history of brutal civil conflict, from a weekend of tension. For many week's concession was not only the action of a great sportsman but "a high mark of statesmanship and peace.

Two years after Liberian President George Weah stormed to power on a promise to create jobs and battle corruption in a country where the majority of people live below the poverty line, frustration with his government is growing. Many accuse Weah of gross economic mismanagement - and also of reluctance to seek justice for the victims of the country's bloody civil wars. We speak to Liberian activist and political analyst Ibrahim Al-bakri Nyei.
