It has not rained properly in southern Madagascar for years. Last year, one million people were dependent on emergency aid, and this year, aid organizations fear that the number will rise. Madagascar's new PM Olivier Solonandrasana has promised to eliminate corruption in the country.

The election commission said Saturday (Nov. 25) that Andry Rajoelina won the first round of the presidential election with 58.95 of the votes.
Just over 46% of the 11 million voters cast a ballot. Ten of the 12 rivals of Rajoelina refused to campaign and urged voters to shun the ballot.

In 2009, Marc Ravalomanana, the democratically elected president of Madagascar, was deposed from power and forced into exile, following violent clashes and a coup d'etat that left more than 100 people dead and the African island nation in turmoil.
Coup leader Andry Rajoelina, a former radio DJ and business magnate, became president of Madagascar's High Transitional Authority. Since then, income inequality, poverty and malnutrition have increased in Madagascar.
From his exile in South Africa, Ravalomanana is determined to regain power by peaceful means and to return to his country. But the road back to his country and to democracy is a minefield of political intrigue and international economic interests.
And there are more than political ideals at stake.

A BBC Africa Eye investigation has revealed that at least six candidates were offered money by Russians in the lead up to last year’s presidential elections in Madagascar.
