In an effort to strengthen security, the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have endorsed plans to create a confederation of the three West African countries.
The three countries currently ruled by their militaries, announced their decision in a joint statement following a two-day meeting in Mali's capital, Bamako, focusing on plans to develop the new Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
The foreign ministers spoke of the “great potential for peace, stability, diplomatic strength and economic development that a strengthened political alliance offers.
The states were previously members of the Paris-backed G5 Sahel agreement, along with Chad and Mauritania.
The G5 accord has since fallen apart, following a series of military coups in the region.

Mali’s interim vice president, Colonel Assimi Goita says he removed the transitional president and prime minister from power because they left him out of discussions to form a new government.
Goïta says President Bah Ndaw and PM Moctar Ouane were trying to upend Mali's democratic transition after they took charge of an interim government last August that deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
The two leaders were taken to a military base outside Bamako on Monday.
The UN, African Union and the European Union have condemned the move which has been described as an "attempted coup".

The UN peacekeeping mission in Mali says the deteriorating security situation is forcing it to speed up its withdrawal from the country.
A week ago, six UN troops and dozens of fighters from an armed group were killed in confrontations near the city of Ber.
In June the Security Council voted to terminate the decade-long mission, announcing the 13,000 peacekeepers would leave Mali by the end of the year.
It followed a request from the military government, which accused the UN of failing to act against armed groups.
So, how important is the role of foreign players in stabilising Mali?

Islamist militants have attacked a river boat in north-eastern Mali, killing at least 49 civilians, the interim government says.
They also reportedly attacked an army camp, killing 15 soldiers, while around 50 militants are said to have died.
The government has declared three days of national mourning.
The Islamist threat has been growing despite claims by the military that Russian Wagner Group mercenaries are turning the tide of their campaign.

Wongel Zelalem reports on Mali’s top diplomat demanding U.N. peacekeepers to leave immediately.
Mali’s government is asking residents who fled the northern city of Kidal to return home.
It is after government forces regained control of the city last week.
Many are from the semi-nomadic Tuareg ethnic group and are too afraid to come back.
The town was part of the Azawad movement's heartland, an alliance of Tuareg armed groups that hopes to gain autonomy.
