Mozambique's military says dozens of civilians have been killed in a five-day siege, including seven who tried to flee from a hotel in the northern town of Palma.
A military spokesman says hundreds of other people – locals and foreigners – were rescued from the town which is a logistics hub for international gas projects in Cabo Delgado province where fighting is still ongoing.
A three-year conflict in northern Mozambique has displaced about 670,000 people, according to the United Nations.
