Djibouti, a tiny country in Northeast Africa, is situated at the gateway to the Suez Canal, one of the world's busiest shipping routes. While its location is an economic commodity for a country that’s half unemployed, it also puts it at the center of a multinational fight against pirates in Somalia and terrorist groups. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Martin Seemungal reports on foreign nations’ interests in Djibouti.

*Djibouti commissioned a $3.5 billion, Chinese-built free trade zone on Thursday, deepening ties with the Asian giant and helping the Horn of Africa nation generate more jobs for its youths.*

Djibouti, with a population of 876,000, already hosts Chinese, U.S. and French naval bases and it also handles roughly 95 percent of the goods imported by Ethiopia, its land-locked neighbour with 99 million people.

The new trade zone, one of several new port and trade facilities being developed by Djibout…

It's a country with fewer than a million people and very limited natural resources, yet Djibouti is courted by world powers. That's because of its strategic location at the entrance to the Red Sea and south of Suez.

Relatively stable, it has drawn the attention of military planners in Japan, China, France and the US, who have all set up military bases there.

Incumbent president Ismail Omar Guelleh has been in power for 17 years but the opposition accuses him of not doing enough to deal with the country's high unemployment.

According to the World Bank, 20 percent of the population lives in poverty. Not everyone has been enthusiastic about the vote, some opposition parties boycotted it.

Voters in the tiny east African nation of Djibouti cast their ballots to pick a president.

After claims of repression and unfair constitutional change, the election is not without controversy.

What will it mean for stability? What are the global implications from a strategically important part of the world?

As Djibouti gears for polls on April 8th, some government ministers have come out to defend rapid development in the country.

The tiny African nation has established strong economic relations with its landlocked neighbour Ethiopia.

With a population of about 850, 000 people, the port country aims to become an economic hub in the horn of Africa region.

The country has been undertaking key steps to realize this dream. In 2011, Djibouti connected to Ethiopia's national power grid.

An opposition group in Djibouti claims that 19 were killed after a clash between police and revellers celebrating a religious festival turned violent.

Government officials dispute this figure and say that nine were wounded.

Independent reports to verify the real figure were not yet available.

The country has often been the scene of sporadic violence , usually sparked by protests against the government of President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

In Djibouti, some 187,000 voters are eligible to vote in presidential elections on Friday April 8. The current head of state, Ismail Omar Guelleh, who has been in power since 1999, is seeking a fourth consecutive term. Nicknamed "IOG", he looks set for a comfortable re-election win against a divided opposition. Our correspondents report.
Djibouti, a small country in the Horn of Africa, is pampered by its international partners because of its strategic position at the entrance to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It's here that France, the former colonial power, has set up its largest military base abroad. The US and Japan also each have a base, while China is set to build one by the end of 2017.
Considered a stable partner, the Djiboutian authorities are nevertheless accused by human rights organisations of gagging the press and making life difficult for opposition parties. FRANCE 24's Duncan Woodside and Thaïs Brouck report from Djibouti.
A programme prepared by Phoebe Lanzer Wood and Elise Duffau.
