The African Union Election Observation Mission says the Zambian elections satisfactorily met the continental and regional principles of democratic elections. Hailing the elections as generally peaceful, the AUEOM urged all parties to resort to legally established channels should there be a dispute on the outcome of the process. Zambian President Edgar Lungu won re-election, in a vote his main rival Hakainde Hichilema rejected on claims of rigging by the electoral commission. Lungu faced a tough challenge from Hichilema to rule over Africa's second-largest copper producer, which has suffered from an economic slump due to depressed commodity prices.

A political truce in Zambia appears to be holding after the ruling party's secretary-general was reinstated.

Protests were followed by violence on Monday when Guy Scott, Zambia's interim president, sacked Edgar Lungu in a decision that was seen by many as politically motivated.

According to the polls, Lungu is a front-runner in the race for presidency scheduled for January, following the death of Micheal Sata, the late Zambian president.

ames Duddridge made the slip-up in a speech at the funeral of Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s founding president and one of Africa’s last surviving liberation leaders, in the country’s capital, Lusaka, last week. Kaunda, who died last month at the age of 97, ruled Zambia from 1964, when it won independence from Britain, until 1991.

'Today the United Kingdom mourns Dr Kaunda’s passing alongside his family, the people of Zimbabwe and indeed the wider world,' said Duddridge. The slip prompted anger on social media, with some seeing evidence of enduring colonial-era attitudes among British officials towards African countries
